Researchers are looking into the Closing Time Effect which is the phenomenon that explains the increase in attractiveness throughout the course of a night out. In this study, researchers went to the same Sydney pub on four consecutive nights. They started with a sample of 166 participants that were then narrowed down based on factors in a baseline questionnaire such as drug use that day or an unclear relationship status. As the study was trying to look at this effect as it relates to those in a relationship and those not, an unclear relationship status could cause inconsistencies in the responses of the participants. Wealth inequality is a big parts of Americans lives, the problem is that most of us are oblivious to just how large the margin actually is. The United States has the highest degree of wealth inequality among all industrialized countries: On the Gini coefficient index of wealth equality, the United States ranks 93rd out of 134 countries (Central Intelligence Agency, 2009). We see this in policy when it comes to taxation and redistribution. Gian, was discussing whether couples will be there for each other when things go right versus when things go wrong. The supportive part of a relationship is when partners stick together when things go wrong, but not much thought goes into having a partner that will be there when things go right and its effect towards the function of the relationship. Even though it uses random assignment to determine which concept and evaluation were paired, there is no random sample of participants. Being an online test, any results are from voluntary responses which is a type of bias. The test does not represent a specific population as a whole and cannot be used to draw statistically significant conclusions. Because of this, I take the end results lightly, but there is something to be said about the idea of implicit association and unconscious prejudice. I agree that these concepts are real and drive our society to do things that we do not realize are biased.…
For my Do-It-Yourself Primatology project I chose to research how Indiana University male and female students behave differently in public when they are eating with a group of friends, versus eating on their own among strangers. I found this question to be thought provoking because of the fact that Indiana University is a very diverse school with people from many different cultures and backgrounds. For this experiment I broke the variables down into four different categories; my first category was five male students who were eating alone, second, five male students who were eating in groups, third, five female students who were eating alone, and finally five female students who were eating in groups. In the article, “My enemy’s enemy is my friend” it talks about a case study done at the University of Texas by two people of the name Elliot Arson and Vernon Cope to test a hypothesis that people will like people who dislike the same person as them, or like someone if they like the same people as them. This runs off of the theory that some people may believe that because they share the liking or disliking of someone that they are similar people with the same values and beliefs, this can be derived from the balance theory. Friendships and Self-Esteem Correlate The feeling of connectedness has been shown in past research to positively correlate with a person’s self-esteem.
