My first question was how am I going to read a book about Calvinism, when I’m not exactly sure what Calvinism is? To say I was skeptical of this book is an understatement. My thoughts have always been that people believe and view things differently and that's ok.…

In This Fleeting World, author David Christian attempts to cover world history in a mere 120 pages. David divides his book into three periods: the era of foragers, the agrarian era, and the modern era. The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements by Eric Hoffer stands out in the social-psychological literature because of it’s author’s notorious lack of formal education and for the conclusions he drew about social movements and their participants. Hoffer, seeking to better understand the prognosis of large social movements and how they gain and lose members, applies numerous theoretical examples to illustrate his arguments including Nazism, Christianity, Islam, and Communism. Hoffer’s book provides an historically-backed assessment of, mostly western social movements but fails to include the largest possible scope and empirical evidence base. To fully understand the books shortcomings, though, we must first look to its conclusions.…

The poem "Annabel Lee", by Edgar Allan Poe, shows the speaker's way of coping with the death of his beloved, which is displayed as obsession towards her and his judgment of the holy as guilty. The speaker justifies his obsessed love to Annabel Lee as stronger than any extraordinary force, and presents the holy as disgraced and malice for trying to separate them. First, the repetition of words, phrases and sounds emphasizes the speaker's obsession towards Annabel Lee. The dark, disturbing themes within his reality filled photo-ethnography, Righteous Dopefiend, attracted a wide audience. In ‘Righteous Dopefiend’ Bourgois and his research assistant Jeff Schonberg followed the lives of 24 homeless heroin injectors and crack smokers in San Francisco over a period of 12 years. The ethnography was written to shed light on the controversial topics of poverty, addiction and homelessness, and to reveal how political and social structures are responsible for such a destructive part of society. Bourgois’ ethnographies boast strong influence of both political-economy and interpretative anthropology.…
