Later, Ford brought Platt, and Eliza to his house, and asked his personal assistant, Chapin, to provide Platt and Eliza new clothes and something to eat. The second chapter explores slavery and the transition from a mostly African-born slave to population, to a mostly American-born population, during the colonial period (late 1600s until about 1770). At the beginning of this time period, most slaves were imported and not born on American soil. After their forced immigration, these slaves underwent a process called ‘seasoning,’ or training, where they were “broken in” and made to realize that slavery would be their identity for the rest of their lives. As time went on,…

The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass exemplifies the complexities and paradoxes involved in the genre of the slave narrative. While, at many points in the narrative, Douglass appears to be merely conforming to the standard requirements of the slave narrative genre, the subtleties and intricacies of his work challenge both common characterizations of slaves and the narrative conventions themselves. By appropriating the very mechanisms and tropes that readers expected of him, Douglass retools traditional techniques to illustrate his specific account of slavery and to assert his humanity.…

The editor could have tried and probably did write his own ideas for the story. Solomon was born a freeman but kidnapped and stripped of his rights and his dignity when he was sold a slave. He was a slave for 12 years before being rescued. During his time as a slave, he recounts many stories of him being blamed for things he did not do and of course getting punished for them; to keep his sanity he recalls not allowing himself to cry. Once his master was getting the flogger stick ready for some angry reason or another, Northup grabbed the stick from his master 's hand and beat him senselessly. Although Northup thought the punishment for that would be death, by virtue of his unpaid debt, he was simply sold to a different…

The establishment of slavery in the early years of America is one of the most documented systems of the abuse of human rights in history. The Classic Slave Narratives is a book compiled of four extremely powerful stories of individuals who survived the enslavement in Colonial America. The book written by American educator and scholar, Henry Lewis, Gates, Jr. reminds the reader that while the founders of this country were fighting off the British and writing about their freedoms, there were other men taking care of the upkeep of their farm and cleaning their houses. It also shows that even though different slaves were in different conditions, all slaves wanted the same idea: the desire to be free.…

Over time, media has become a huge part of the development of historic memory. There is a line between what is historical fact, and what has been imperfectly depicted in media, such as film. Oftentimes, it has been the latter of those two. The movie 12 Years A Slave, however, rejects this notion, and presents a story that is not rife with historical inaccuracy, unlike many others. The film, directed by Steve McQueen, is a historical drama film, and an adaptation of the memoir 12 Years A Slave, written by Solomon Northrop. The novel was closely followed throughout the film, not sparing the viewer any graphic detail. As with all historical recollection, there cannot be 100% accuracy, and 12 Years A Slave is no exception. There are moments throughout the film where one may question the actuality of that scene, but for the most the movie sticks to a historically accurate experience.…

It is impossible for a white person in the novel to understand the effects of slavery. They cannot feel the pain behind the experience and what it does to a person. For example, it is impossible for some white people to understand why Sethe killed her child. They put her in jail for it, yet perhaps somebody who has experienced slavery could understand her reasoning behind it. This excerpt touches not only on this subject, but also the inability for a white man to admit to his part in slavery in both metaphorical and visual ways.…

These were the main tasks show in “12 years a slave”, for some the tasks would be cleaning or acting as a driver making sure the other slaves stayed in line and completed their tasks. “The precise organization of their labor varied according to the crop and the size if the holding” (Foner, 324). In Solomon’s case, he did all of these tasks and rotated them by season. During the season of cotton picking, a slaves day was of course from sun up to sunrise. “There are few sights more pleasant to the eye, than a wide cotton field when it is in the bloom. It presents an appearance of purity, like an emaculant expanse of light, new fallen snow (Northrup, 116).” The sight of a new bloomed cotton field may be beautiful but the work slaves did during this time of year was in no way pleasing in any way. The first time a slave went to the fields to picked his sack was weighed at the end of the day. The weight of the sack was then recorded and everyday from that point he or she was required meet or exceed that limit or they would be whipped or beaten severely. Because of this harsh process, cotton became king of all exports produced in the states. To keep production going the plantation owners had to make their slaves submit to them, there was no time for acting out and also the owners began to imtemidate their slave to keep order and also to avoid revolt. “Slaveowners employed a variety of means in their attempts to maintain order and discipline among their human property and persuade them to labor productively ( Foner 325).” In order to avoid the harsh labor of their day to day life some slave would act in a way called “silent sabatoge”. This is where the slaves would break tools, fake sick, or do anything they could think of to disrupt the production of…

Solomon and the other slaves were handed over to a man named Theophilus Freeman, a nasty slave trader who changed Solomon’s name to Platt. Solomon spends his next days in Freemans slave house waiting to be bought and sent off to a plantation. While waiting at the slave auction Solomon noticed a small boy with a violin and started to play, Solomon explained, "I struck up a tune, and finished it." (IBID, 54) William Ford a plantation owner purchased both Eliza and Solomon and brought them back to his home in central Louisiana. Solomon describes Mr. Ford to the reader, as “in my opinion, there was never a more kind, noble, candid, Christian man than William Ford." (IBID, 61) Solomon is sent to work in the lumberyard where he quickly shows he’s very skillful. Mr. Ford recognizes Solomon as being especially intelligent and hardworking in the yard. Solomon was able to come up with a water system that saved Mr. Ford a good amount of money. However, tough times brought Mr. Ford to sell Solomon to one of his workers a John M. Tibeats. Solomon describes Mr. Tibeats, as "John M. Tibeats was the opposite of Ford in all respects." (IBID, 69) Solomon was forced to work with Tibeats and they were unable to work peacefully. One day Tibeats goes to whip Solomon and he just had enough and fought back. The two wrestled around but Solomon being the stronger man beat Tibeats until he was forced to retreat. Solomon described their fight as " Reaching down, I seized him by the ankle, and pushing back with the other hand, he fell over on to the ground. Putting one arm around his leg, and holding it to my breast, so that is head and shoulders touched the ground, I placed my foot upon his neck. He was completely out of power." (IBID, 74) Tibeats did not take this loss lightly; he and two other white men came tied Solomon up and prepared to hang him. Lucky Mr. Chapin saw what happened and chased the men…

The story simply goes along in chronological order which allows myself, the reader, to easily understand what is taking place. Solomon Northup being a very well educated man takes on some very sophisticated language in his writing. Having previous high class education affected the way the author wrote this book. Another factor to take into consideration while reading was the time when it was written. “I dare not show any lenity.” Several times throughout the book Solomon uses subtle hints as to when this autobiography was written by the way he words certain things. The reading level of this book would be considered very high as knowledge of complex language and ability to understand writing from previous era’s is needed. The evidence presented in this book is extremely believable as the editor’s preface confirms all doubts someone may have as this is an autobiography. 12 Years A Slave proves to be a very educational piece of literature as the reader is put through two perspectives of life. The view of a free man and a slave shows two very diverse sides of life. This book is very shocking and educational as we see what the truth is behind the unfair life of slavery. There is several scenes that left a lasting sight in my head because of the vision used in the writing. A scene where Solomon had acted out towards his master and in punishment was subject to death by being hung from a tree. “As the sun approached the meridian that day it became insufferably warm. Its hot rays scorched the ground. The earth almost blistered the foot that stood upon it. I was without a hat, standing bald headed, exposed to the burning blaze.” Barely staying alive by the very tips of his toes, Solomon was in for a tough ride for survival. This story is educational for all audiences as the truths of slavery are…

Twelve Years A Slave, by Solomon Northup. Extreme violence is central theme in Northup’s narrative. He emphasizes that the slave owner’s authority was only maintained by terrorizing enslaved black people they owned with relentless physical and psychological violence. Whips, paddles, shackles, and the stocks make repeat appearances, especially in Solomon’s description of his life as a newly kidnapped free man. Stripped of his clothing and nailed to the floor, Northup endured blow after blow to his naked body after he awoke in a slave pen; his enslavers paused only to ask if their prisoner would accept his new status. As Northup recollected, it was only after the paddle broke and his enslaver seized a rope to continue beating him that Northup was finally silenced into accepting his new identity as a slave. In these scenes of brutality, Northup insisted such sadistic events were so traumatic that he could still feel them while writing.“I thought I must die beneath the lashes of the accursed brute. Even now the flesh crawls upon my bones, as I recall the scene. I was all on fire. My sufferings I can compare to nothing else than the burning agonies of…
