They are practically the opposite of the positive benefits of staying abstinent. Having sexual intercourse as a teen raises the risks of infection, STIs, teen pregnancy. Additionally, methods of birth control might not work, possibly causing all of the above. Being an abstinent teen prevents not being mentally or emotionally ready, whereas being sexually active does not. This is because teens can be forced into having sexual intercourse, which will cause their self esteem (mental and emotional health) to lower. Teenagers self esteems will lower if they are dealing with teen pregnancy as well. It will put lots of additional stress on their life, mainly their future plans. Having to talk to people if a teen gets an STI or pregnant during sexual intercouse will strain their social health. This includes educational experiences, jobs, and relationships. More opportunities will be opened up because they will not have to possibly deal with an STI or a child to take care of. Staying abstinent will also lead to a healthier lifestyle in all of the health aspects. This is because it does not affect physical, mental and emotional, or social health. However, if a teenager does not stay abstinent, then all of this will be negatively affected. Therefore, being an abstinent teen will not only help all the components of one’s health, but will improve their future
