Muslims Were Banned from the Americas as Early as the 16th Century
Bans that are imposed on religions are always a controversial topic. For example, Donald Trump (President of the United States) gave a travel ban to a few Muslim countries. This obviously caused lots of controversy and lead to some changes. However, in this article, it mentions Muslims being banned from American colonies as early as the 16th century. That comes as a surprise because I had not heard of much oppression against Muslims from that way back. In the article, it says,
“On Christmas Day, 1522, 20 enslaved African Muslims attacked their Christian masters.”
This sentences gives us an implication to one thing. Slavery against people of the African descent went back all the way to the 1500s. In this point in time, Spain was a big world power and controlled the place where this revolt happen. After this retaliation, the Spanish authorities had already forbidden Muslims, Jews or Protestants to their colonies. The reason I chose this topic was because our generation has little to no idea of life in the 1500s. I think this article gave us some brief information on how there was some discrimination existing in the 16th century. I had not known much about Colombia before this article, but I did learn that it used to be in Spanish control and slavery existed there. I did some research and I found out Colombia is in a better place as a government now and a lot more fair than before. I also chose this article because I think it has lots to do with today’s events. There were travel bans in the 1500s and with Trump’s executive orders, some discrimination is happening today
