Do you think the benefits of industrial agriculture outweigh the harms? If you were asked if industrial farming is better than organic farming, would you be able to explain why? While following this cow he came saw that many cows were force fed corn because the industrial farms produced so much they had to find new ways to use it. The corn caused the cows to become more fat faster for consumers like us. He states, “ the industrial food chain...the way it forces some animals to eat corn. And the saddest example of this might be what it means for the cows. The cows are by nature not a corn eater.” “ But the river of surplus corn is waiting and so the cows must be forced to consume it and turn into beef you and I can buy.” These cows would not be force fed food that is not apart of their diet causing diseases and long-term effects if it wasn’t for the industrial farming. It is known that the fresh water supply is only 1% of the amount of water on our Earth. Yet, because of industrial farming the future of our water may be in danger. As stated from the Food Empowerment Project, “the most common cause of water pollution in the U.S. is excess levels of nitrogen and phosphorous, the main source of which is fertilizer runoff that occurs when rain carries fertilizer into waterways. Runoff from both synthetic fertilizers and animal waste can poison drinking water and aquatic ecosystems.” They further go on to say how these pollutants to the water not only affect the drinking water and aquatic system, but it will affect humans and wildlife. Just like Food Empowerment Project stated, the pollution comes directly from the industrial farms fertilizer. Industrial farming is already bad for the environment, animals, and now it's affecting our drinking water the can and will cause serious health concerns.
