Summary: Mixing Ethanol With Fuel

Decent Essays
Mixing ethanol with fuel has drawn a lot of attentions in community. Although some experts has confirmed that there is almost no harm to use ethanol as our fuel in our engines or cars, some people who has experienced with it in real deny that statement. We don't know which is true or false, but this issue should be put into our consideration.

From the article, it seems that the small engines are worn out and easy to get damage when these are used with ethanol. Benjamin Mallisham who own a repair shop in Tuscaloosa states that the lawnmowers he had responsibility for were damaged by ethanol by 40 percents. He also claimed that ethanol melted the engines from out to inside which is the cause of the damage.

The reason why I wrote that we don't know if it is right or wrong to state that ethanol destroys our engines because some experts, especially ones in the Renewable Fuels Association, tested it and concluded that it was fine. However, mechanics also used them and gave a lot of reasonable analysis about the harmful things that ethanol brings to the engines. One of the explorations was stated from Bob Magnotti that ethanol brings moisture which is the reason that reduce the engines life.

Not only mechanics, but also a biofuels researcher also doubt about if it is really useful. That is when we haven't consider that putting ethanol in fuel also causes another problem about economics. However, if we change to use the pure gasoline for small engines, we should also use it for big ones which had no complaints from people. The discussion will require a long time to be

Known as the human species oldest recreational drug, Ethanol is a colorless, flammable liquid, with a distinct smell, and burns with a blue flame. It has the chemical formula of CH3CH2OH (it's molecular formula) or C2H6O (it's empirical formula), that can also be abbreviated using chemistry notation as EtOH. It has a melting point at -173.2°F , and a boiling point at 173.1°F. Ethanol has many handy uses around the world, in many different places.…

Producing the fuel is proving to be costly. “Presently the process of extracting cellulose from the plant is proving difficult and expensive.” (Clark,Josh “Grassoline” 6) The cost in order to produce the needed enzymes for the fermentation process will further raise the cost. However, even with the additional cost cellulosic ethanol at the end of the day would still be cheaper than gasoline.…

Ethanol disrupts water. What I mean by this is that ethanol has the ability to make hygrogen bonds. These are the weak, yet plentiful, bonds a hydrogen atom can make with a negative atom like oxygen or nitrogen. If you don't remember hygrogen bonds, please look them up. They are not ionic bonds nor covalent bonds, but rather weak attractive forces between hydrogen and a semi-negative charged oxygen or nitrogen.…

This will play a key role in designing engines for use with ethanol which will be discussed later. Despite these advantages, Ethanol does have one key disadvantage; that it is not as energy dense as other fuels. As can be seen in the table to the left, the decrease in ethanol content results in increase in energy content. Alternative energy is an issue with implications at the local, national, and international levels.…

When Ethanol is burned the some of its matter is burned causing the Ethanol to lose mass. This is supported by the fact that on average the mass of the ethanol after burning was 2.245 kg less than before burning. Another way we can see that the ethanol was losing mass was was that after 20 minutes we could see a product of the ethanol burning, we could see some water vapor on the box covering the Ethanol and BTB. Because matter can not be created or destroyed to get water in the box some of the matter from the ethanol must have been transferred.…

Do you want a vehicle that is good on fuel, reliable, and has power? Diesel vehicles are good on fuel, because they are good for about 300,000 miles, and provide more power. They are more reliable because they run off of compressed air and their engine parts are built stronger than traditional gas engines parts. Everyone should own a diesel vehicle over a gasoline vehicle because diesels are more fuel efficient, have more power, torque, and more reliable. Diesel engines provide more power using less fuel compared to gasoline engines.…

What is Ethanol Poisoning in Cats? Ethanol poisoning occurs in cats when they ingest a substance that is either an alcoholic beverage or something that produces ethanol inside the body after ingestion such as uncooked pizza or bread dough. If you think your cat has ingested ethanol, it is important to visit a veterinarian as soon as possible, because if treated early there is a good chance the cat will recover. Symptoms of Ethanol Poisoning in Cats Ethanol poisoning may cause depression of the central nervous system, which may result in the following symptoms within an hour of ingestion: • Vomiting • Lethargy • Ataxia • Hypothermia • Sedation • Dehydration • Metabolic acidosis The cat may become comatose and develop respiratory depression. The abdomen may become extended if the cat ingested uncooked bread dough.…

I will counter by showing examples of vehicles that have been running for years on bio-diesel and cooking oil without any negative side effects. This is due to it not being a new idea, it has been around since “Rudolf Diesel first invented the diesel engine, and showed it at the 1900 Paris World's Fair, running on peanut oil” (West, 2004). Additionally, technology has come a long way in changing the properties and viscosity of biodiesel. This reduction in viscosity increases the ability of the engine to use it without any negative side effects (Balat, M., Balat, H., 2008).…

Critics of diesel claim that diesel should not be used, because in early diesel engines emitted large amounts of nitrogen oxide.…

Introduction There has been a lot of controversy if the use of electric cars will stand the test of time and be able to become the newest coming trend in the transportation sector. With all of the technological advances, environmentally, healthily and economically electric cars do benefit the entire population and also help reduce the toxicity that the planet is now having to deal with because of all the pollution man-kind has created. Ecological Factors The use of an electric car allows to reduce the amount of toxins that are released into the atmosphere compared to all the toxins that are emitted from regular gas vehicles. While using gas, you don’t only hear the toxins but you can actually see what is coming out of your car’s engine.…

If you live in Iowa there is a large chance that you have heard of the fuel source, Ethanol. Whether you support the idea or not, it’s at nearly every gas station across the state. Ethanol burns cleaner emissions, lowers gas prices, and is a renewable source of energy. But some think it’s not worth creating Ethanol because it raises food prices, it requires too much energy to create than what is being yielded, and there are better ways to save oil. The truth is, these are partially true, but they still aren’t enough to stop Ethanol production.…

Gas is a nonrenewable energy source and we do not have an abundant supply, because it takes millions of years to form. Replacing the use of these fossil fuels with battery power will save gasoline so we have more in the future in case batteries fail . If batteries ever do come to naught, gasoline is still available for use, but not as a permanent power source, instead it will be used as a substitute. We would save an abundant amount of fossil fuels if we switch to non gas cars.…
