Summary: Medical physicists are starting to become required to achieve a certified status in their profession. The initiative for this change is primarily due to the improvement in patient safety. Beginning in 2012 people sitting for the board exams will be obligated to have a degree or be pursuing a degree from an accredited medical physics masters, PhD, or clinical residency program per the American Board of Radiology (ABR). Eventually, the people sitting for boards will be required to graduates in an accredited residency program. When a person becomes certified by the ABR they are deemed ready to practice …show more content…
Irradiation of patients and imaging studies have grave impacts on patients. The role of the medical physicist is crucial. The article is both interesting and informative. It allows the reader to realize how many steps are involved in obtaining x-rays or mammography for example. It is complex and of paramount importance for the practitioner to understand and implement the studies to the maximum benefit of the patient. The new regulations will certainly make it more prohibitive to get certified in the profession. Ultimately the certification will provide uniformity in the profession. It will be beneficial for the patient because standards will now be met and patients will have even more confidence in their providers for such important procedures. The challenges this will create for the student medical physicists will be marked. Limited spots will exist in residencies and some people who worked with non-accredited programs may have to repeat studies or programs to achieve certification. …show more content…
As a dentist, I will plan on taking multiple x-rays of my patients. The critical nature of positioning and wavelength of the x-ray will be a facet of my career which I must master. I realize all my equipment must be calibrated and for the benefit of my patients I would feel better knowing the people doing this were held to certain uniform and high standards. I will look forward to working in tandem with medical physicists to offer the absolute best care to my patients that I can. I feel it is my responsibility to stay on top of all current information and to have an in-depth understanding of the medical physics which will impact my patients. The scientific content with imaging studies interests me because they will be involved with my planned field of study. The article was very comprehensive and I would recommend this article to any student going into the medical
