The focus of my research involved exploring death with dignity acts in the United States and the ethical dilemmas that surround the more states from passing similar laws. As I studied this topic, I quickly learned about the complexities of the issues concerning the right-to-die controversy. Currently, there are seven states the U.S. with death with dignity laws that permit individuals with terminal illnesses with six months to live to end their life with a medication prescribed by a physician. The seven states encountered considerable resistance in their efforts to pass legislation. However, proponents insist the laws are a constitutional right and provide patients the autonomy to make their own decisions about their end of life event.
The research in the project brings attention to political, religious, and medical arguments on both sides of the debate. Some of the controversial areas involve the rights of persons with disabilities, ones’ mental capacity, age, and the level of dignity a patient receives from their medical provider. All of these areas affect individuals that are internal and external to the organization.
