Mike Davis begins his argument, Let Malibu Burn: A Political History of the Fire Coast, with strong imagery: “consuming hundreds of homes in an inexorable march across the mountains to the sea” (par 1). Davis then constructs a premise that wildfires will continue to cause immense damage as long as private residential homes continue to exist in the Santa Monicas. He rebuts this premise by offering numerous historical examples such as the wildfire in 1835 in Jose Tapia's Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit and the 1903 fire that started in Calabasas and ended at the sea, both of which caused immense damage that even forced one person to move to Los Angeles after his ranch had been destroyed. Davis then creates a new thesis regarding the relationship between the vegetation and fire intensity. He commences his thesis using ethos and logos, where he writes…

It was on the corner of Shirley and Charlotte Streets a horrific accident had taken place. A black Honda accord coupe with chrome rims and blue lights had climbed half way up a lamp pole, but had seemed to collide with a white Toyota Camry first, with a yellow sticker on the back glass that read “ baby on board”. The smell of gas and fear saturate the air and quickly filled the nostrils of those nearby. Shattered glass and broken orange and red light pieces decorated the road around the scene. Right at the foot of the scene surrounded by a crowd of men, women and children, whispers can be heard as loud as a person with a megaphone at a pep rally.…

Short stories are a great way to escape into literature, without having to spend hours on end reading. I’ve recently heard about your hate against the idea of all short-short stories, not only did I find that tremendously disappointing but I cannot seem to comprehend. Seeing as I am taking a short story class at the moment really surprises me, not only can short stories spark a reader but it can show them different aspects of writing longer novels cannot. A few stories I will recall are “Sleeping” written by Katharine Weber, “How to Set a House on Fire” written by Stace Budzko, and “Jumper Down” written by Don Shea. Through this collection of short stories I have pulled together these three different fictional works are consistently swift,…
