This relationship spans all ages, gender, and disease. This relationship also extends to other members of the medical community whom you rely on in order to give patients the best care possible. This relationship demands self-reflection and self-motivation in order to succeed. I chose family medicine for this rewarding and challenging relationship. A family doctor has a responsibility to maintain skills and medical knowledge but also to apply themselves to the community in which they work. As a medical student, I did my third year in an Integrated Community Clerkship where instead of participating in multiple core rotations in the city I instead had a longitudinal, integrated community-based clinical training over 38 weeks in a small community. This training encompassed all aspects of family medicine care. Not only was I able to manage a diverse patient panel, I was also able to participate in the community by coaching the local high school rugby team and volunteering with local outreach services. I am planning on working in a Canadian rural community as a family physician when I am finished residency. I hope to be able to practice in a diverse setting, with opportunities to participate in clinic, emergency and hospitalist responsibilities.
