The purpose of these instructions is to show step-by-step how to bridle a horse.
List of Equipment:
• Halter
• Horse
• Bridle- headgear made of straps used to control the horse.
• Reins- long, narrow leather straps that are attached to the horse’s bit to guide the horse.
• Bit- a piece of metal put into the mouth that is connected to the bridle to assist the rider with communicating with the horse.
• Crownpiece- the piece that sits behind the horse’s ears.
• Browband- the piece that sits on the horse’s forehead.
• Noseband- the strap that goes around the horse’s nose and holds the bridle in place.
• Throatlatch- the strap with the buckle that runs under the horse’s throat.

Never walk behind the horse because horses can kick.
Steps:
1. Approach the horse slowly at angle towards the left shoulder of the horse.
2. Put the reins over the horse’s head by guiding the reins over the horse’s ears. The reins should sit on the horse’s withers (the base of the neck above the shoulders). Reference picture 1. Picture 1- Withers of a Horse (http://horse-pros.com/5478/horse-anatomy-withers)
3. If horse has a halter, take off the horse’s halter.
4. Place the bit in your right hand.
5. Warning: Possibility of injury if you put your fingers by the horse’s mouth. Place the bit by the horse’s mouth. The horse should accept the bit by putting it in its mouth.

6. Slide the crownpiece of the bridle over the horse’s ears. There should be a space between the crownpiece and the browband. Reference picture 2 above.
7. Pass noseband under the cheek pieces.
8. Put the noseband strap through the buckle. Reference picture 2.
9. Pull the noseband strap as tight as it can go by pulling on the strap up towards the horse’s face.
