Being a tour guide pushes a person to be open minded and curious about other people. I remember having a tour group from New York City, and we had a great conversation when we were comparing our respective Chinatowns. The conversation had me continuously think of questions and reply to their question with an answer to the best of my ability.…

One thing that I learned from Lee’s “The Making of Asian America” was the feelings of the Asian immigrants. Previously, I had not known that many of the Asian immigrants has actually considered themselves “American” and were willing to denounce their home country. Lee explained this well in her section about Japanese immigrants. In this section, she discusses how far the Japanese Americans were willing to go to prove that they were, in fact, American. This includes being obedient to the government’s wishes, prospering in the conditions that they were put into, and even joining U.S. army in WWII.…

In spite of how frequently he throws extravagant parties, they are often for strangers. When Nick arrives at one such party, he observes, “Sometimes [the guests] came and went without having met Gatsby at all, came for the party with a simplicity of heart that was its own ticket of admission” (Fitzgerald 41). Fitzgerald’s use of juxtaposition contrasts well between the assumed demeanor of Gatsby’s wealthy and civilized guests, to how they are actually “conduct[ing] themselves according to the rules of behavior associated with an amusement park” (41). This implied childish behavior would be considered disrespectful at a high class party such as Gatsby’s, but as only a few guests have met their host, they feel free to act as they please. Nick also discerns, “In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whispering and the champagne and the stars” (Fitzgerald 39).…

Coming from The Great Gatsby written by Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald uses Gatsby’s parties to symbolize something that the readers would never expect. Gatsby’s parties are symbolized at the beginning of the book as rowdy parties where the rich have lots of fun by drinking and spreading rumors. By the end of the book, Fitzgerald had completely changed the meaning of the parties to that Gatsby held them to show off his wealth to Daisy and so she could come and see him. By doing this, it can be known that the rich were very selfish in the 1920s and only wanted to benefit themselves. Fitzgerald himself begins the story by showing the readers what many people during the 1920s considered to be a party.…

    (41) Gatsby’s guests find it easier to laugh because they are getting increasingly drunk as the night goes on. Trying extra hard to impress the other guests, they put on fake personalities as they laugh away the pain of their wasteful and extravagant lives. Moreover, these high-class New York elites feel as if they have nothing to live for and therefore waste their days away just drinking. For example, the man that Jordyn and Nick meet in the library has “been drunk for about a week now” (46). The man is indisputably drunk and has been trying with little success to “sober [himself] up.”…
