Discussion: Gender Identity in Life-Span Development According to Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman (2016), gender indicates the social and psychological characteristics associated with being female or male. However, in a new understanding gained about gender identity refers to characteristics that generally identified with female gender which comprise being gentle, emotional, and cooperative while characteristics generally identified with male gender comprise being aggressive, rational, and competitive. In particular, gender is seen to be either feminine or masculine (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016). Beyond that, gender identity portrays an individual’s internal psychological self-concept of being either male or female. On the other hand, another understanding …show more content…
However, gay and lesbians experience similar developmental stage as the heterosexual people (Bailey & Zucker, 1995). Consequently, effects of gender identity during development refer to the recognition of being girl or boy. But the gender identity development effect on the gay or lesbian makes them feel different from their peers as a result of conflating gender atypical behavior. In addition, gender identity effects on development through young and middle adulthood involves a notable gender atypical behavior making girls to prefer boy’s game, hairstyles, clothing, and preferred to play with boys rather than playing with girls and insisting they are boys while boy’s do the same by preferring girl’s as a play mate avoiding their male peers and insisting that they are girls (Green, 1987). Generally, these boys addressed themselves as to have homosexual orientation as adolescents and young adult.
