This week in my CT’s Kindergarten classroom I got to take a glance on grading papers along with holding a writing group. Today was an early dismissal day for the students so they were a bit more off task than usual but that was to be expected due to the interruption in daily schedule. However, the para that helps in the classroom was also absent, so it was up to me to conduct her writing group assignment for the day. The students were working on a writing assignment that pertained to Earth Day and how they were going to help save the Earth. The class had been reading a book about Earth Day celebrations from around the world to help them think about how they were going to help the Earth on Earth Day. This was my first time grading Math tests so I felt it was a great way to introduce me to analyzing student’s work. I had an answer key to make the grading a lot easier, which was nice. Everything seemed to be easy until I started to grade the tests. For example, one of the students only answered a third of the problem right but the answer was worth 2 points. It made me think how would the teacher grade this? This is hard when there isn’t a point for every part of the answer and you don’t give half points such as 0.5 points for the partially correct answer.
After I thought about it for a while to get my mind going on the difficulties of grading papers, I knew it was time to ask the teacher for her opinion on what to do. Of course, I was going to ask the teacher all a long but I wanted to try and figure it out before asking for help. When I asked the teacher she said to mark the problem completely wrong due to what the directions asked the students to do. It make sense to grade that way since the student is responsible for reading the directions at the top of the assignment and following them to complete the problem, which the student did not
