Field Journal 8

This week in my CT’s Kindergarten classroom I got to take a glance on grading papers along with holding a writing group. Today was an early dismissal day for the students so they were a bit more off task than usual but that was to be expected due to the interruption in daily schedule. However, the para that helps in the classroom was also absent, so it was up to me to conduct her writing group assignment for the day. The students were working on a writing assignment that pertained to Earth Day and how they were going to help save the Earth. The class had been reading a book about Earth Day celebrations from around the world to help them think about how they were going to help the Earth on Earth Day. I was to help the students

This was my first time grading Math tests so I felt it was a great way to introduce me to analyzing student’s work. I had an answer key to make the grading a lot easier, which was nice. Everything seemed to be easy until I started to grade the tests. For example, one of the students only answered a third of the problem right but the answer was worth 2 points. It made me think how would the teacher grade this? This is hard when there isn’t a point for every part of the answer and you don’t give half points such as 0.5 points for the partially correct answer.
After I thought about it for a while to get my mind going on the difficulties of grading papers, I knew it was time to ask the teacher for her opinion on what to do. Of course, I was going to ask the teacher all a long but I wanted to try and figure it out before asking for help. When I asked the teacher she said to mark the problem completely wrong due to what the directions asked the students to do. It make sense to grade that way since the student is responsible for reading the directions at the top of the assignment and following them to complete the problem, which the student did not

The first journal that caught my attention and fit the category of “a personal response to a theme/topic in the novel” was providing a narrative which exemplifies my relationship with my best friend: the fourth journal entry. The reason why I chose this specific journal is because it really tackled the personal experience I once had with my former relationship and how it tied in with knowledge and beliefs. My interpersonal relationship with my former best friend resembled a certain situation that the characters in the book discussed; in both instances, both of us changed our views on seeing the advantages and disadvantages of a problem and seeing what consequences come with each side. Being in a relationship is a gateway to learning new things…

Donica examines the value of Handwriting Without Tears® (HWT) program for use in general education kindergarten classroom. Traditionally, the HWT curriculum is implemented by the occupational therapy practitioner in one-on-one treatment sessions with students. For the study, HWT was introduced into two consecutive kindergarten classes with the teachers, instead of OT practitioners, leading handwriting exercises for 15 minutes daily. The control group was the kindergarten class from the previous year, whose students progressed to first grade. Students’ legibility at the end of the school year was compared to other students’ scores who were taught using a different teaching technique called the D’Nealian style of writing.…

Mary Beth Stevens suggests writing supports reading by asking students to draw upon common knowledge and thinking processes (2014). In the Texas Treasures Literature curriculum students continually respond to text through writing activities. At the end of each section they record their responses by writing a personal response. These responses require critical and higher order thinking skills because students answer open-ended questions and utilize summarization, inference and interpreting meaning skills. This allows students to explore their own thoughts and make connections to the text.…

I had to be flexible to cater my lesson plan to my student, so he could build upon what he learned and advance through more challenging activities.…
