During my Spring Semester I intern with Judge Francyzk in the Erie County Court in Buffalo, New York. This internship helped me shape my knowledge in the criminal justice system. In this internship I observed cases and trials and also reviewed legal documentations. Moreover, this internship was helpful because it opened new opportunities for my future in the long run. Throughout this internship I also got to determine what areas I am more interested and would like to pursue in the criminal justice system. Through the centuries, the court system has changed. The lower courts handle misdemeanors and also civil lawsuits. Moreover, in lower court the defendants and complainant can appeal to a higher court which are county courts, courts of appeals and supreme courts. In supreme courts are mostly about lawsuits with a large amount of money involved. Erie county court is a type of trial court that handles felony cases and appeals from lower courts. These felonies cases can include robberies, homicides, assaults, DWIs, and many more. Also in county courts there are a few cases that hears appeals from justice …show more content…
When the court was selecting the jurors for this case it was complicated because many people felt that they would biased towards the defendant. This taught me that in many cases people tend to choose a side before the evidence could be presented. In the case of The People of New York vs David Roth. This was a The defendant is being charged with predatory sexual assault and attempted rape in the first degree. The defendant is accused of sexually assaulting and raping his 10-year-old niece at the time. The defendant took his victim to an empty garage, and gave the victim drugs and alcohol. Moreover, in this case I saw a few expert witness giving their professional opinion in a case. This was interesting because when the forensic lab examined the victim’s underwear, she did find the presence of semen, but no sperm. The forensic lab expert also testified that the evidence is not 100% true. This allowed the defense attorney to create doubt in the jurors. This taught me that there would always be a doubt in specific cases. I also learned that cases that involve children, are very sensitive to the public and
