The third literature review helps provide a background for my research project. This study helped situate my research and the title of the paper is “Don’t Be a Whore, That’s Not Ladylike”: Discursive Discipline and Sorority Women’s Gendered Subjectivity” by Lisbeth A. Berbary. In its abstract, it states “While multiple and competing understandings of sororities exist in popular culture, academic research on sororities tend to homogenize the experience of sorority women, simplifying their existence to a quantitative understanding of specific behaviors such as those associated with binge drinking, eating disorders and heterosexuality. Specially, it ignores processes of discursive discipline that converge to disseminate social expectations, maintain dominant discourse, conceal processes of social control, and limit possibilities for gendered subjectivity” (Berbary, 2012). This study significantly provides a more complex understanding of sorority women by exploring sorority women’s experiences through an ethnographic lens enlightened by the poststructural theory. All in all, the author contextualizes sorority women’s experiences and examine the dissemination and control of femininity within a sorority.
