Empathy is a major theme in “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Phillip K. Dick. Dick writes about empathy several times throughout the novel and how both humans and androids express it. In the novel the new Nexus 6 model androids have the ability to vividly express human emotion. Before the nexus 6 model androids, the biggest difference between humans and androids was the ability to care for another living being. Are these new Nexus 6 androids capable of learning and expressing empathy, if so, is it any different than the empathy human’s express?
After the war the humans began to believe in a popular religion called Mercerism. The basic idea of this religion is to allow the followers to experience great empathy for Mercer through a virtual reality device. Once they arrived each human was given a Nexus 6 android to help them settle into their new life on Mars. A few of these androids ended up murdering there human and fled to Earth to live a life of freedom. One could say that these androids felt empathy of the freedom that humans were so lucky to have, on the other hand it’s hard to see a murderer as someone or something that expresses empathy.
A good example of androids showing empathy is Miss Luft the opera house singer. She wants to be perform and loved by everyone android or human and she cares about others; empathy at its finest. She even calls out Rick, who could be argued as having almost no empathy at all. On page 106 Rick is confused and questions why Luba didn’t kill him when she easily could of. Miss Luft clearly expresses empathy for both the human race and her own
