Summary: Classroom Observation

Improved Essays
The student I decided to observe is a student in a Self-Contained classroom named Luis. Luis has an IEP and is classified as having a specific learning disability such as Dyscalculia and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Luis also happens to be colorblind, and his favorite color is red. Luis is six years old turning 7 in February. This observation study on Luis was performed in the Bay Shore school district at one of their elementary schools Mary G. Clarkson. Luis teacher is Mrs. Reilly, she has been teaching special education for eight years, and the past seven years have been at Mary G. Clarkson teaching self-contained Kindergarten or First grade and occasionally both at the same time. For the 2015-2016 school year Mrs. Reilly …show more content…
Reilly started her lesson with using the smart board; she started off at the number 1 and had a picture of a single farm cow with the sound a cow makes, and how to spell the number 1(one). The class would repeat the number 1 and respond to Mrs. Reilly that there was one cow. The next slide had 2 farm pigs with the noise a pig makes, and the spelling of the number 2 (two) underneath the pigs. The class would repeat the same steps they did for number 1, which was repeating the number and how many farm pigs were on the screen. The class followed this pattern and steps up to the number 20. After these steps Mrs. Reilly used a formative assessment of having the students build using counting cubes the number written on the smart board. For an example the first number was 8, the students had to connect 8 counting cubes together. Mrs. Reilly used this strategy to inform herself on how well the students can count up to a certain number using the counting …show more content…
He started to play with the cubes as if it was a toy, rather then remembering that they are tools used for math. Luis was alternating the colors blue and red he was building an excess amount past the number that should have been built. As Mrs. Reilly observed this during the lesson she removed the blue cubes and left Luis with only red cubes. Luis seemed much more focused after only being left with red cubes, but had trouble building the correct amount of cubes, Luis would lose count, or skip a cube while counting. That is when Mrs. Reilly gave Luis a counting board with boxes labeled 1-20. This helped Luis separate the counting cubes, as he was counting them out. Luis found this to be sufficiently helpful as he started to correctly build the correct numbers that were appointed by Mrs.

Polly showed understanding, so the lesson was extended by introducing another tens frame to challenge her understanding (Department of Education, 2013). For example she was asked” how many counters would fit into these two frames”. Polly answered twenty correctly without counting each box. She confidently made numbers in the teens and removed the counters correctly when asked to show various lower numbers. Two tens frames were used (see appendix 1) to represent two different groups such as “ten and two make…

To improve the lesson next time I teach it, I will make sure to direct the students how many frog counters are needed to be placed on top of the lilly pad. This way students are working on creating a better understanding with the numbers and not just randomly putting frog counters on top and bottom of the lily pad. I will include singing the numbers 0-5 with the student at the beginning and end of the lesson to keep them engaged.…

I also think by using the Step-by-Step, he is able to hear the voice output, which helps him use words to communicate his own thoughts, even though he cannot verbalize the words himself. It was also very effective that the teacher modified the Twin Talk during the group lesson on the color green. Since this child is visually impaired and would not have been able to see through the plastic and identify his choices on the Twin Talk, by attaching wax strips, he was able to match the symbols with their meaning and communicate to the class whether he liked the object, or if he…

I learned that Focus student number one increased his percentage from the baseline to the assessment by 20%. The baseline data showed that focus student number one received 70% accuracy when identifying and sorting shapes differing in only one key attribute: shape. The percentage of 70% represents that this was new vocabulary for the child, but at the same time not too challenging. The assessment data showed that focus student number one received 90% accuracy when identifying and sorting shapes differing in two key attributes: shape and size. Two key attributes were chosen for the assessment because as time passed, the child became comfortable with only one key attribute.…

I had the pleasure to interview two children for this interview assignment project. I interviewed my neighbor Gaby, who is 11 years old and my other neighbor Collin, who is 8 years old. Piaget acknowledged that some children may pass through the stages at different ages than the averages noted above and that some children may show characteristics of more than one stage at a given time (Koocher). After interviewing these two I believe this quote is a true statement because Gaby is 3 years older than Collin and during her questionnaire she had more intellectual abilities on the experiments than him. I assume if Gaby was Collin’s age she would have less knowledge on the experiments due to complex of understanding of the world.…

Therefore ensuring that Children are able to group numbers of ten allows them to develop an understanding that ten ones are one ten. This encourages students to learn multiples of ten, twenty, thirty ect and develop the habit of grouping numbers and collections when counting, making it easier to see the amount of numbers or objects. According to the Department of Education and Training of Western Australia First Steps in mathematics resource otherwise known as FSiM (2004), “Students should develop the idea that the way we write numbers makes it easy to count forwards and backwards in tens, hundreds, and so on, as well as from any number” (p. 60). Hands-on activities and resources such as jigsaw cards, ten frames, hundreds, tens and ones MAB cubes, 0-99 and 1-100 number charts can be used to further develop children’s understanding of grouping, subitizing and counting (FSim, 2004,…

    The Inquiry Approach

Students can be actively and consistently engaged throughout a lesson; the key to this is selecting activities that will allow for them to be so engaged (Smith, 2013). Sessions that started with the Inquiry Approach allowed for effective questioning which in turn encouraged discussion among the students and with the teacher. The Inquiry Approach caused students to think about the subject matter and pursue their own line of questioning in the form of a Class Discussion. In constructivist classrooms, Class Discussions are useful activities as they can help students reinforce or correct their current knowledge of the subject matter (Eggan & Kauchak, 2009). It is important as a teacher to verbally acknowledge all responses during such discussions…
