Summary: Chaos In The Classroom

Change is a big step a teacher encounters in her teaching career. Some methodologies that was taught back in college has become obsolete because of the new era of students has emerged. The action research, Chaos in the Classroom: Center Learning in a 1st Grade Setting, involves sources of data such as classrooms observations, interviews, and surveys to support an intentional change in teaching practice. Lanaux, Vice, & Fasching-Varner (2014) conducted the research in order to improve teaching using center learning. The researchers were able to conduct the research in a timely and organized manner. The center activities were carefully chosen and instruction were clearly given to the students. Although, I agree with the findings, Courtney and

Like so many, I felt an undeniable call to action after watching Davis Guggenheim’s film Waiting for Superman. The film poignantly illustrates the imperative need for a long overdue paradigm shift in American education. In the film, activist, educator and founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, Geoffrey Canada, shares the disillusionment he felt as a child upon realizing that Superman was not coming to save him from the perils of his impoverished South Bronx neighborhood. His message in the film is that we must become our own superheroes.…

As I am at the center I engage in one-to-one interactions with children, get on the child’s level for face-to-face interactions, use a pleasant, calm voice and simple language, provide warm, responsive physical contact. I Follow the child’s lead and interest during play, help children understand classroom expectations. I also listen to children and encourage them to listen to others and acknowledge children for their accomplishments and effort. By doing this it develops positive teacher-child…

I am currently student teaching in a 4th grade classroom at Sunset Elementary under my master teach, Alissa Nakaji. Upon my first day, I instantly fell in love with the dynamics of the classroom. The classroom had colorful posters explaining rules, consequences, inspirational quotes, and a list of roles for each student (changed weekly). This classroom feels more like a community of students striving together to have an optimal learning experience instead of just one teacher demanding and controlling the students. It is very autonomous and the teacher is involved only when needed.…

While observing in Beth Johnston’s First Grade classroom at Eugene Field Elementary School, I have noticed some effective and ineffective classroom management practices that she uses while I have been in the classroom. One effective classroom management technique that I have observed is that Mrs. Johnston puts her student’s desks into groups of three or four. This is an effective technique because she puts her strong students with her not as strong students, which can help with the students who might need a little help staying on track with the lesson that they are supposed to get done. Also, Mrs. Johnston has changed the groups a couple of times since I have been observing in the classroom. This I believe is effective because the students…

When looking over the Common Core State Standards from the Loveless reading, he took a very negative approach on what the standards would change about schools. The part that was most interesting to me was when Loveless referred to furthering teacher development with the Common Core Standards. Through the Common Core Standards teachers will get further development through changing teaching styles, implementing mentor programs, and providing ongoing support. When looking through teacher development there was many different sources that all had interesting ideas on how to change the teaching styles in the classroom. “The Common Core State Standards for English Language and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical subjects have…

In my observations I see all aspects of development and growth occurring based on the daily routines that the teachers and students go through. All the students in the classroom have an equal chance to be interactive, and they all get to make decisions about what they want to do during the day. The way the classroom is set up allows for student-centered…

While completing my walkthroughs for CED 100, I discovered many things about education and teaching that helped me on finalizing my decision to teach Middle School History. After completing all four hours in lower elementary education, upper elementary education, middle school education, and high school education, I had a very good understanding of how classes were conducted and how students from different age groups react to different forms of teaching. My first encounter in a classroom, at Model, was with Mrs. Noland’s lower elementary classroom. When I walked in, my first thought was, “chaos.”…

I have always felt the urge to help others, whether it is through community outreach activities or simply helping my peers learn a melody in my orchestra class. This is why when I was granted the opportunity to become a peer tutor and teacher's aide at my school starting my Junior year, I did not hesitate to take it. I tutor students in the resource program for one hour a day, during school, five days a week in multiple subjects including Math, History, and English. When I began tutoring, I had no idea to what extent this experience would change my outlook on my role as a tutor. For instance, one of the students I tutored was a boy named Oswaldo, who seemed to have given up on his education and did not even bother to turn his assignments in anymore.…

RAP 5.1 Rules, Rituals, and Routines As I watched a first grade teacher, I attempted to pay close attention to her class and how she taught them. The teacher succeeded to reach all of the positive classroom management skills and avoided several of the poor transitions. In most instances, the class moved smoothly from one project to the next. Transitioning from bigger activities like classroom time to PE went much better. When walking to the next activities, the teacher placed on of the more advanced and non-troublesome students in the back of the line, front of the line, and also next to the students that may act out.…

Moving forward, I plan to incorporate my findings into my daily teaching and instructional practices. My first step in improving students’ attitude toward writing and improving their skill is to review the remaining units and find ways to incorporate topic choice in the writing.…

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Mrs. Flinn’s fourth grade classroom over Spring Break. I was able to observe for a total of four hours between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. During my time with the fourth graders, I took a closer look at the solid behavior classroom supports being used. Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students.…
