She mentioned that she wanted a change from being a blackjack dealer for many reasons. Most notably, she felt like she had to suppress her feelings as she watched people lose money and even kill themselves over it. As a surveillance officer, however, she states she’s working to “protect the casino’s interests” but she’s “not taking anybody’s money” and “So it just feels a lot better”. This is significant because it seems like being a surveillance officer matched her values more, meaning that she’s more motivated and more comfortable in her workplace as she gets to commit more kind acts. Consequently, there’s a positive relationship between her motivation and her performance, meaning her productivity increased as well. Her comfort seems to have increased in the surveillance officer environment, thus being a more positive work environment for her. The textbook discusses the influence of positive work environments as being important for motivating and satisfying employees, which would be applicable to this interview as Kim K. seems to be searching for this. I feel most satisfied when working at any job that requires me to help people. I similarly would not enjoy working as a blackjack dealer because seeing people lose money, knowing that some people were there in the wee hours of the morning with deeply rooted issues they were covering up by gambling and knowing people were committing suicide in the facility that I worked in every day would depress me. My most recent job involves working as a Peer Writing Mentor, and I am motivated because I know I’m good at it, so I perform well and I know that I’m helping others, thus leading to my job satisfaction. In my opinion, satisfaction and motivation are codependent. If I felt I wasn’t doing meaningful work, I wouldn’t be satisfied and I feel like this interviewee feels the same way as she contemplates her reasoning for not pursuing another business, anything other than working in a casino. The only difference between my job and her job might be in the feedback. She stated that she got good reviews, but I’m assuming those reviews are from people she works with. I’m sure anybody who she’s watched and aided in getting arrested wouldn’t be the one reviewing her. In my case, those whom I directly help, which are students, review me. I value this feedback because they are also my peers, so knowing that I’m helping other college students to do their best
