I’ve always viewed college pessimistically while I was in high school; I use to think about the overwhelming lecture halls, the huge class sizes, and uncaring professors. I use to think that professors were intimidating figures that wanted to make their classes so difficult that one could possibly fail. My entire view on the tertiary education system changed when I met my Focused Inquiry professor, Dr. Julia Kaziewicz. I wanted to interview Dr. Kaziewicz to further understand why I am intrigued by her methods of teaching. Dr. Kaziewicz conducts herself in a way that students feel comfortable sharing their personal experiences, much like a trust worthy friend. She is well respected by her students, and wants them to fulfill there potential. …show more content…
Kaziewicz has been instructing for nine years, and has been at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) for the past three years. Most educators want to be instructors because they want to see their students succeed, in doing so the students reflect the professors’’ great teaching styles. However, for Dr. Kaziewicz I learned that “it’s more, it's not about the teacher; it’s about the students. It matters what the students get out of course.” She said, “I enjoy seeing students become who they are, and for my students to see everything that they’re capable of.” Dr. Kaziewicz understands that there’s “ an adjustment coming from high school to college,” but there’s no reason to have a less than passing grade in this course. To be successful in this class, “you have to do the work.” Dr. Kaziewicz enjoys listening to audio books, going on adventures in the great outdoors, as well as spending time with her family when she’s outside of the classroom. When I asked her, “How do you define leadership?” Dr. Kaziewicz said, “ A leader is a person that can motivate and help those around him develop their skills. It’s a person that allows everyone to shine, not just himself.” Through this interview I learned about the different values Dr. Kaziewicz has, and learned that we have similarities in our societal

In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” As my final days of high school are coming to a close, I’ve come to recognize, like President Kennedy, that leadership and learning go hand in hand. Learning shapes how you lead as a person, and I can attest to that through my senior year in the Montour Spartan Marching Band. This marching band season, I applied and became the section leader for the flutes and piccolos.…

Potential Vice-President of the Class of 2018 As stated by John C. Additionally, I tend to be known as the kind of student who is looked up to by many due to my high grades, my caring personality, my determination, and my ability to follow instructions.…

I take a great deal of pride in guiding students to work together to improve themselves and their community. As the student body president of my school and the chairperson of my state’s student council, I push my fellow leaders forward through genuine trust, personal bonds and interpersonal harmonious relationships. It is my ultimate goal to leave others satisfied with their roles and the results that we achieved together by simply giving them a platform to share their voice. Focusing on critical aspects of humanism by using empathy, I encourage my students to take action. However, this does not make me the perfect leader—there’s no such thing.…

From succeeding in my first semester, I began to sympathize for students who struggled in Biology. My sympathy became action when I became a Peer-Led-Team-Learning (PLTL) leader for FIU’s Bio Department. This position, was meaningful in strengthening my leadership skills and using academic success to inspire and guide others. This position was about constructing and leading the perfect Biology discussion to ensure student success in the classroom. I learned leadership was about first, listening to your team’s concerns, then, making decision that strictly address the issue.…

I have come to learn that not every class I sign up for is going to turn out the way I originally expect it to. There is so much to leadership that I never even knew existed before, but the more I discover, the more eager I am to explore. Adaptive leadership is a way of putting leadership into words, as complicated as that can actually be. I learned characteristics of leadership and how to set achievable goals, as well observed my growth as a leader over the semester and determined principals from this class I never want to forget.…

I am grateful to be able to say that I have never worked for a principal who I have viewed as a boss. The two I have worked under were inspiring leaders who worked diligently to lead the teachers on the missions they declared for the school. The Importance of Teachers as Leaders In today’s world, there is an ever-present need for restructuring our public school systems, particularly regarding leadership in our schools. “Teacher Leaders” is a term that is becoming more used in today’s educational setting. Teacher leaders, or leaders as teachers, are teachers “who aspire to stretch beyond their classrooms to engage in leadership roles that take many shapes and forms, both informal and formal” (Education Commission of the State, 2010, p.1). This is not a new concept but one that is being tweaked.…

As in teaching a course, I learnt that an effective mentor finds ways to motivate and encourage his mentees, but he must also ensure that mistakes are acknowledged and learned from. Thus, I will ensure regular communication and feedback with each individual. My teaching experiences, coupled with my undergraduate and graduate experiences in which I was a student have taught me the profound impact that one good teacher can have toward a student’s overall development. While the specific learning goals of a course are dependent upon the nature of the course, the education level of the students, the purpose of the course within the department, and the relationship between the course and related courses, I have a personal goal and a commitment to become the best teacher I can be: (1) Preparation and enthusiasm are cornerstones of effective teaching; they are contagious and inspire critical-thinking and…

Before taking this class, I wasn’t sure of who I was as a leader. I had never held any important leadership roles, if any at all.
