Summary: A Slave Occupation As A Slave

One thing that stood out in the reading was that there was a slave occupation as the slave driver. This makes me wonder how the other slaves perceive these slave drivers; traitors or selfish? I also wonder if they were picked for the job or they asked for it, which makes me think that these slave drivers only thought about themselves and they are willing to hurt other slaves to avoid working or getting hurt themselves. In the reading, West Turner stated, “Ole Gabe didn’t like that whippin’ business. When Marsa was there, he would lay it on ‘cause he had to. But when old Marsa wasn’t lookin’ he never would beat them slaves.” This statement makes it seem they were picked for the job or maybe, perhaps, others picked the job to make their lives easier. There are many speculations on how they came upon the job but, in my opinion, it is worthy of a discussion. …show more content…
On Chapter 3 it stated, “Poor white farmers enjoyed the privileges of free status. They could get married, have families and bequeath their property and their freedom to their descendants… These privileges of freedom - none of them possessed by the slaves – made lesser white folk feel they had a genuine stake in the existence of slavery, even if they did not own a single slave.” Does this mean the slaves are somewhat free? Unlike the slaves before them, “their successors were not nearly as fortunate. They worked harder and died earlier.” In all parts of North America, the need for slaves increased. In the South, they were purchased in large amounts to satisfy the amount of labor needed in the plantations. Harriet Jacobs’ recounting of her life through Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl has not only exposed the great pains she suffered through during her time in slavery but has exposed deep rooted ideologies of black women in American society. Although the actions perpetuating these ideologies have since been abolished, the ideals themselves have been retained through multiple generations of teaching. Jacobs’ story has successfully exposed where the ideologies may have come from through her explanations of sexual corruption, mental manipulations, and power dynamics. Jacob’s made it clear that these struggles were not unique to her but were dealt with by all black women during slavery and in the ‘free world’. These struggles have been most notably re exposed through the Women’s Liberation movement which actively excluded black women.…

Being freed from slavery was a wish come true for the blacks, but this wish was not fulfilled by the Americans. From not being allowed to vote in many states and having restrictions on voting, to being banned from integrating with the whites, and to give up on one’s education, blacks in the North were not free as they should have been. They were ripped away from several basic rights, such as acquiring a job or even to integrating with a white person. By stating that these blacks were “free” just sugarcoated the fact that they were simply being more and more discriminated against by society. Even though blacks were free men just like the white men, they did not get the same rights as they deserved.…

Being a slave is being owned as a possession. Being told what to do, with no freedom. Being mistreated if not obedient. Being disorientated with your own life and mind because you were manipulated by people that are considered higher than you due to the skin they were born into. The way these people explained slavery to be was brutal, but they wrote like it wasn’t a situation so miserable for a life to be given, they wrote how they didn’t know life was any better for them other than how they were previously and currently treated at the time.…

Also, slaves shouldn’t have to be told to do something and when they don’t do it, get beaten. The whole situation is not okay, and it shouldn’t have existed.
