When the warm weather hits like a punch in the gut, people flock to closest beach with enough food to feed an entire zoo. During the sunny day, beach goers participate in common activities such as picnics, feeding seagulls, and enjoying the refreshing feeling of the cold, salty water of the ocean against their sun kissed skin. However, at the end of the day, the beach is covered in crud that was left behind. David Barry finds situations like these infuriating. To empathise his hatred of littering, Barry wrote the short story “A Couple of Really Neat Guys”, which uses hyperbole and eccentric characters to convey that littering is wrong. In “A Couple of Really Neat Guys”, Barry uses hyperbole to describe “The Picnic People from Hell”. By using …show more content…
“red tights.., plus red Superman boots, plus blue shorts and shirts with out superhero names. During the short story “A Couple Of Really Neat Guys”, Barry writes about his super hero, “Captain Tidy” and his sidekick, “Neatness man”. First, Barry describes the looks of Captain Tidy, professionally lettered on them, plus white gloves, plus capes made from garbage bags, plus utility belts.” (2). When Barry describes the looks of his and Dr. Jeruss’s costumes, it not only amuses the readers, but also makes a statement on how passionate Barry and Dr. Jeruss are about not littering. The costumes show that the two grown men hated litter enough to wear outlandish costumes, go out in public with said costumes, and correct each litter bug that they saw. Next, Barry describes the actions of Captain Tidy and Neatness man when he writes, “...We spent the day cruising the streets, when we saw people litter, we’d leap out…. And say say, … “Sir, you don’t want to litter, DO YOU?” (2). When Barry states that they “cruised the streets” all day, it once again shows their dedication to the anti-littering movement. All the while, the Barry and Dr. Jeruss remain polite while they correct the litter bugs. However, Barry demonstrates that comic characters do have a purpose. In his passage, Barry writes “...They’d look ashamed, take their litter back and dispose of it properly” (2). By commenting that litter bugs would indeed pick up their trash and looked ashamed while doing so, it proves that people know litter is wrong, and that they have the ability to dispose of their trash the proper way. They are just choosing not to.Ultimately, the silly costumes did serve their purpose: correcting litter bugs around the

Reading the title, Insert Flap “A” and Throw Away, of Perelman’s essay, I was immediately reminded of a tiny telescope model my younger brother purchased. which I was instructed to help him construct, along with the frustration and anger it brought me. The fate of the telescope model was as described in Perelman’s title, the trash. Through the title, the author creates a connection between the reader and himself, emphasizing that he is only human, therefore he can only follow such meaningless directions so closely. Eager to learn the outcome of this similar situation that he was put through, I was prompted to read his essay.…

The story “Mess” by John Hollander is interesting take on the concept on cleanliness and how the human mind perceives it. Hollander starts out his essay by giving an example of how different people react to a mess. He refers to the subjects as X and Y. He states that what may seem messy to X, could be perfectly neat and orderly to Y. Hollander even goes as far to say that if Y had a pile a books, and X arranged all the books into a neat stack, the neat stack could appear to be utter chaos to Y. After this profound example, the article continues to go on and list all the different kind of messes that exist in our lives. Hollander breaks the messes into different categories such as outdoor messes, indoor messes, personal states, and personal appearance messes.…

By being a street sweeper, one does the same routine activity every day, eliminating the opportunity for the mind to wonder. Society today labels trash collectors and other careers such as this as being career choices that people who have no where to go or have limited education would choose. In society today, these jobs pay well, but the brain is not stretched intellectually, thus creating a void of professionalism and respect in the community.
