The first is because while the consequences for a first time offense are severe many people sill drink and drive. If the government were to make it more severe than it might cause more people to stop and think about drinking and driving. Another reason is if someone did drink and drive and then were to do it a second time I do not believe they should be given a second chance or even a third chance. In Canada 55% of motor vehicle crashes have to do with alcohol and/or drugs. These vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in individuals aged 16 to 25. This statistic needs to drop and I feel that increasing the consequences for a first time offense and a second time offense will accomplish just that. Since teenagers and young adults are the ones who are most effected by impaired driving if we make a second time consequence the loss of their license for life they won’t drink and drive. Not being able to drive for over three quarters of their life will cause them to stop and think about what they’re doing. A third reason as to why I am purposing this law is because so many people lose loved ones to impaired driving and statistics show that in almost two-thirds of vehicle crashes where alcohol is involved the teen driver who was drinking and driving was at fault. If we are able to get teens and young adults to take drinking and driving more seriously this statistic will surely go down. By purposing this law we can save more lives and safe others from feeling the pain of losing a loved one to impaired
