Summarize The Consequences Of Drinking And Driving In Ontario

Decent Essays
I want to purpose that the consequences for drinking and driving in Ontario be changed. Currently in Ontario any drivers that have a BAC between 0.05 and 0.08 percent will lose their license for 3, 7 or 30 days. Another law in Ontario also states that drivers who are 21 years of age or younger who have any alcohol in their system will have their licence suspended for 24 hours. They can also face a $500 fine. These consequences I feel are somewhat effective for a first time offense but the consequences for a second offense need to be more severe. Currently the second offense for impaired driving is they need to pay a $150 fine, they can’t drive for 90 days, have to attend an alcohol education program, will have an ignition check on their vehicle …show more content…
The first is because while the consequences for a first time offense are severe many people sill drink and drive. If the government were to make it more severe than it might cause more people to stop and think about drinking and driving. Another reason is if someone did drink and drive and then were to do it a second time I do not believe they should be given a second chance or even a third chance. In Canada 55% of motor vehicle crashes have to do with alcohol and/or drugs. These vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in individuals aged 16 to 25. This statistic needs to drop and I feel that increasing the consequences for a first time offense and a second time offense will accomplish just that. Since teenagers and young adults are the ones who are most effected by impaired driving if we make a second time consequence the loss of their license for life they won’t drink and drive. Not being able to drive for over three quarters of their life will cause them to stop and think about what they’re doing. A third reason as to why I am purposing this law is because so many people lose loved ones to impaired driving and statistics show that in almost two-thirds of vehicle crashes where alcohol is involved the teen driver who was drinking and driving was at fault. If we are able to get teens and young adults to take drinking and driving more seriously this statistic will surely go down. By purposing this law we can save more lives and safe others from feeling the pain of losing a loved one to impaired

Also, to be more specific about Criminal Law, this article falls under Consolidated Acts section 253 under the Criminal Code of Canada. This association is due to the notion that the government is interacting with the general public rather than individuals interacting with one another and that the infringements occurring affect the Criminal Code. In section 253, it states that “Every one commits an offence who operates a motor vehicle or vessel [...] whether it is in motion or not, (a) while the person’s ability to operate the vehicle [...] is impaired by alcohol or a drug; [...] one hundred millilitres of blood”. In private morality, the Canadian government enforcing stricter rules and sentencing harsher punishments seems justified. The idea of limiting the number of car accidents caused by drinking is one that should be taken seriously.…

Getting a DUI charge is already bad as you face court, time in jail, huge fines and suspension of license. When it comes to a DUI charge there shouldn’t be any tolerance. The B.A.C level of consumption should be lowered as study showed that in 2004 to past years the B.A.C level was at 0.10%. In that same year it got dropped to today’s level of 0.08%.…
