One of the most impactful of these devices is his use of Exemplum(?) to prove his point. He uses his own story to give a first hand example of someone blaming their problems on the government, “I once ran into an old acquaintance at a Middletown bar who told me that he had recently quit his job because he was sick of waking up early. I later saw him complaining on facebook about the ‘Obama economy’” This quote shows someone whose problems are caused by their own laziness blaming their economic difficulty on Obama when in fact his policies help more than harm the man. This proves vances point from the first passage where he points out that many hillbillies believe they can not get jobs when in reality they can they just do not try to.
(Section three add transition type 2 ) In section three Vance uses a lot of connotative diction in his explanation of what failure means in the hillbilly world. Words such as Premature parenthood, incarceration, drugs, and unsuccessful are used. These words evoke negative emotions in the audience's head. Vance uses statistics of which groups of people have the highest hopes for their children's success, of the groups only 44% of working class whites whites thinks that their children will fare better than they did. Logos is used here to give solid evidence that working class whites are not motivated to do better. The use of Logos near the end of the passage was perfectly placed since it backs up all of Vance's previous statements and stories with evidence that what he is saying is actually true.
In conclusion this passage from Hillbilly Elegy gave insight into the lives of the Hillbilly people. It explains their way of thinking and the reasons they act the way they do. This passage was important because it allows for a deeper understanding of the Hillbilly culture which will hopefully lead to a better understanding between them and the rest of the
