Sulfanilamide was the earliest industrialized sulfa drug created for public consumption. Sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), a more complex sulfa drug, can be produced from the active drug sulfanilamide. Like a canvas that had paint added in steps, aniline is the first step to turn the compound into sulfanilamide. The few reactants used to create this useful drug include a derivative of acetic acid (specifically, acetyl chloride), chlorosulfuric acid, ammonia, and finally hydrochloric acid is added to complete the process. These ingredients are the core compounds to successfully and efficiently create the product …show more content…
Overtime, sulfa drugs were produced in greater quantities as the understanding of the properties of sulfur helped increase the usage to help fight off bacteria to prevent infections. In the most recent years of 1930s, SMZ was created to help fight cystitis and other urinary infections caused by bacterial infection. Sulfa drugs were very popular in the early 1900s due to the fact that it proved effective when used on patients. Its early discovery of this useful drug has helped popularized when medicine and drugs were just discovered and mortality rate dropped drastically. SMZ really aided in humanity’s beginnings of growth of longer life expectancy and lowered infant
