After he married Nel, he wanted a job at the new bridge that was supposed to build in the Bottom, but because of his race, it was difficult for he to there or to even find a decent job. When Jude first interact with Nel’s friend Sula, it was the time she returned to the Bottom after spending ten years away. At first, Jude describes Sula as someone not beautiful, but someone who goes around to destroy people home. “Jude’s temper flared just a bit as he looked at this friend of his wife’s, this slight woman, not exactly plain, but not fine either, with a copperhead over her eye” (Morris 103). Ironies, what he saw in Sula’s birthmark is exactly the type person she is. Sula does not want to get married nor was she trying to make anyone happy by been in a relationship. However, in the story Jude went and sleeps with his wife’s best friend because he was frustrated about the job he does “He ended it with the observation that a black man had a hard row to hoe in this world” (Morris 103). Unfortunately, Jude wanted something to shake up is life, but it cause him to allow Sula’s birthmark to fool him and destroy the long term relationship between him and his wife and her best friend, Sula. Snake as a whole is poisoner, and this poison affected the bond between Nel and Sula.
Finally, Sula’s birthmark is seemed differently by different characters the way she behave around them. Some people sees her birthmark as a longtime friendship, beautiful, while other sees it as a poison.
