Gilbert Meilander has a PhD from Princeton University. He is now a Senior Research Professor at Valparaiso University. The thesis of this article is “It should therefore become part of their calling—at least in this time and place—to bear witness to all of us that suffering and death “are real but not ultimate; [and that] they do not speak the last word about the human condition.”
He starts out the article talking about suicide. Christians believe that suicide is wrong because we, as creatures, try to take control of our life over God, our creator. We ought to believe that God is the author of our story, or life, and we are the character in His book. Suicide communicates a wanting to be free and restricted. Suicide says “I want to be my own
