Introduction This essay will examine interventions to improve the prevention and awareness of Native American youth suicide. Interventions include the work from Le and Gobert exploring the ideations mindfulness-based suicide prevention, and work from Robinson, Hetrick, Cox, Bendall, Yuen, Yung & Pirkis exploring the idea that suicide rates can be reduced from internet based interventions. Both interventions that were explored showed promising results, and allow plenty of room for further growth regarding each intervention. Promoting resilience and reducing factors that increase risk is the goal of suicide prevention. Both of these interventions have been the most successful programs thus far in the fight to reduce suicide rates in the Native…
Current Suicide Risk Assessment JM endorsed current SI with a plan but denied intent. He noted onset of SI was two months ago following the loss of his job. He endorsed frequency of SI as every couple of days. His SI tends to be fleeting (last a few minutes) but tends to be active because he has a plan (hanging himself with a rope in the rafter of his garage). JM's thoughts on wanting to die appeared when JM thinks about the conversion when he lost his job.…
Dr. Flanagan’s risk assessment I would say it compares a lot to the reading assignment journal, “A tool for the culturally competent assessment of suicide: The Cultural Assessment of Risk for Suicide (CARS) measure. Psychological Assessment.” Dr. Flanagan’s risk assessment interview with Tommi is base on the depression assessment. I noticed that Dr. Flanagan started the evaluation confirming her culture. According to Chu (2013), The range of research on cultural suicide risk factors is difficult for anyone clinician or researcher to comprehensively grasp or access quickly within the limited time often allowed in crisis situations.…

Each year in the United States, 31,000 commit suicide. Despite the fact that women attempt suicide more than men, men often succeed at ending life when attempting suicide. Traumatic events such as sexual trauma or physical assault can place people at higher risks for suicide (Tull, 2009). An examination of suicide amongst war vet performed by MDPI revealed that the suicide is prevalent amongst certain social groups and certain topics come up such as are the members of these groups at higher risk of suicide as opposed to the rest of the population?…

In this research article the authors discuss aspects of background suicide and how it is crucial social and health issue. Japanese researchers evaluated the frequency of attempted suicide and discovered individual, relational, developmental, and psychological dangerous issues connected with attempted suicide in a typical community model of minorities in an urban Japanese city. In the main Method Survey of over 2,000 applicants, ages between 15 and 24, were enlisted using street intercept practices. The outcomes overall concluded that, about 5% of males and 10% of females testified a previous suicide attempt. The authors found that in the case of males, attempted suicide was individually related with involvement of school harassment, being homosexual,…
However, it is important to note that creating culturally relevant models of suicide prevention requires understanding and attention to specific risk factors. It is not uncommon to see documented risk factors similar to those of non-Aboriginal youth, including male gender, history of substance abuse (especially solvents or inhalants), history of a psychiatric problem, parental history of substance abuse or psychiatric problem, feelings of alienation from the community, history of physical abuse (Petawabano et al., 1994). However, given that Indigenous youth tend to attempt and commit suicide more often to their counterpart (Petawabano et al., 1994), it is important to consider other factors contributing to this divide. Such factors can be drawn through the cultivation of “document culture which is a key ingredient in the creation of an independent nation” (Brown and Dugiud, 1996, p, 4). Literature has pointed to the erosion of a strong cultural identity as one important contributing factor; which is important for the development of a strong sense of self, self-esteem, and resilience (Kirmayer, Simpson & Cargo, 2003).…
In the United States, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death, while it was the sixth leading cause of death in Japan. While suicide is slowly being addressed in many Asian countries like Japan, the root cause in their high suicide rates lies in their societal ignorance of mental health and traditionalist culture; therefore, we must strongly advocate for change in creating more awareness by educating people of the need for mental health education in these countries. Firstly, in Japan, mental health is often stigmatized in Japanese society leading to many individuals from seeking help. In Japanese society, individuals who suffer from any sort of mental illness, with depression the most common are often shunned into feeling ashamed of themselves,…
A survey done by Kral, Idlout, Minore, Dyck and Kirmayer (2014) in two Inuit communities uncovered what the communities identified as reasons for the high suicide rates. Although the Inuit are a specific group of Indigenous people, Kahn (1982) identified cultural loss being a community-level risk factor for suicide in all Indigenous groups. Common themes which emerged in Kral et al. (2014)’s discussions with Inuit respondents were the lack of having someone to talk to and being lonely, moreover suicide was viewed as expressing anger in the community. Family problems are prevalent in Indigenous communities, these problems stem from changes in communication, parenting and intergenerational relations, which prompt feelings of loneliness (Kral et al. 2014).…
The issue of food insecurity has also been linked to higher rates of behavioral health challenges in adolescents- these issues surrounding the lack of food can impair household and community growth. Food insecurity also lowers the quality of life for native americans by showing a decline in mental health due to the anticipation of being stigmatized by others and the internalization of these negative beliefs can lead to depression and anxiety- making them feel outcasted and isolated. These same communities also struggle with high rates of suicide, as reflected in recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control. Among AIANs ages 15 through 34, suicide rates are 1.5 times higher than the national…
