Suicide Prevention 5k Analysis

Improved Essays
Activity Three The third event I participated in was the Suicide Prevention 5k. This event was held at the Sanford Center. Participants could choose to run, walk or skate. Both a 5k and a 10k were also offered. I chose to participate running in the 5k with some of my cross country teammates. The course for the races were located on the path that goes around the Sanford Center and through the neighborhood behind it. Prior to the race, inside of the Sanford Center, was information set up about different ways to help yourself or someone else prevent suicide. There were different brochures for people to take as well as a speaker speaking on suicide awareness. Each participant got a bag with a tee shirt, a bib number and suicide prevention information.

One important lesson I learned is that it takes a great amount of planning and volunteers to run an event similar to the one I volunteered for; I was amazed to see how many people were wearing volunteer shirts around the event. Planning was required in the setup of the race, who would speak at the opening ceremonies, where sponsors could set up their tents, what volunteers would work where, the scheduling of the event, different activities the participants could complete, prizes, and various other aspects. Something else that I learned from my experience is that advertisement is an important factor for an event similar to Hoosiers Outrun Cancer. Not only is advertising important for sponsors, it is also important for awareness of the event. Before I ever volunteered for Hoosiers Outrun Cancer, I had seen students walking around campus with the shirt on from last year’s event.…

Suicide rates among the AI/AN population age fifteen to thirty-four years is almost 250% higher the general population and suicide is now the second leading cause of death for AI/ANs (Gray & McCullagh, 2014). Gray and McCullagh (2014), report that mental and behavioral health problems, stressful life events, and substance abuse are directly related to an increased suicide risk and unfortunately many AI/AN communities are affected by these risk factors in combination with more (drug and alcohol use, violence exposure, and limited resources). One theory as to why there is such a high suicide rate among AI/AN youth, as stated by Gray and McCullagh (2014), “is that there is a disconnect and a sense of loss of belonging to both their culture and…

About a year ago at this time, I was training for the NYC half marathon. I’d never really taken to running in my life, despite always being pretty active. This was different. After I’d recently lost my mom, running connected me to something larger. When the cold winter air came into my lungs, I knew each breath was all I needed to keep going.…

An athlete can choose to do a more anaerobic event such as the 100, or they can choose an event such as the mile. My event of choice is the 800 meters. The 800 is essentially the breaking point into the endurance events. It is this type of event in which super long distance runners are too slow and sprinters would die before the finish. In this event, it is critical to have good stamina and cross country provides that for me.…

Race and Its Influence on Suicide To commit suicide is to make the decision to take one’s own life. Nearly 30,000 Americans make this decision each year (Rockett, Wang, Stack, De Leo, Frost, Ducatman & Kaputsa, 2010). Like several other issues in the United States, there is a gap in suicide rates. There are numerous factors that are thought to be correlated with suicide rates. Examples of things that could influence the decision to commit suicide include age, race, ethnicity, income, education, and socioeconomic background (Rockett et al., 2010).…

They say sex sells… and that is ultimately the issue. Sexual intercourse was once considered by society to be a private act, a physical pact made between two people behind closed doors. How did such a seemingly private act turn into such a lucrative business; when did it become acceptable for men and women to view their bodies as sexual commodities? In the primitive ages, it was necessary for cavemen to observe the act of procreation so that they could ensure the reproduction and longevity of their species. However, as time progressed, sex became more private because it was no longer necessary for humans to learn through observation when they could communicate the basic concepts verbally.…

My current role includes training mental health and learning disability staff of all disciplines in specialist suicide risk assessment. Within the training I deliver which the training is called STORM (skills training on risk management, developed by Manchester University ) I teach that staff must ask patients if they are experiencing suicidal thoughts. Specifically to ask about the type of thought, frequency, how they manage it, and plans and intent around the thought. It is important to know the answer to this question as it furnishes the assessor with the risk information which will allow them to formulate risk and write a risk mitigation plan.…
