Informative Essay: Preventing Teenage Suicide

Everyone finds a place that they call a safe place, but for teens that is getting harder and harder. Teens are becoming more and more susceptible to the thought of whether suicide is a plausible option for them. Teens are at a particularly high risk when it comes to suicide, and many teens feel they have no choice but to end this internal suffering (Jellinek). Suicide is the third leading cause in teen deaths behind accidents and homicide. Although there are less children taking their lives between the ages of ten and fourteen, there is still enough children taking their lives that more needs to be done to stop this (Jellinek). Many teens look at things one day at a time, and this contributes to the sudden prolonged depression and thoughts of suicide. However, worldwide September is suicide awareness month, and this allows the general public to talk about suicide with less pressure. Along with teens, the Lesbian, Gay, Transexual, Queer, Questioning (LGBTQQ), community is also at a high risk for suicide. Studies have shown that suicide attempts among the LGBTQQ community is a lot higher than the general population, or those who are not apart of the LGBTQQ community (Fenoglio). The Trevor Project is a non-profit organization that raises awareness to prevent suicide among the LGBTQQ community (Fenoglio). The Semicolon Project is another movement to support those who have gone through rough times and contemplated ending their lives, but didn’t. Many have asked why a semicolon is used throughout the makings of this project. Here is the answer: a semicolon is used because in English, an author uses a semicolon when they could end a sentence but decided not to.
