In Romeo and Juliet, one of the main themes is the role of suicide. In modern time, suicide is viewed differently. It is more common, the weapons are different, and we have different reasons for doing it. In Romeo and Juliet, suicide is used to portray a tragedy and is supposed to have an effect on the people in the play and even the reader.
Today, suicide is pretty common and it’s tragic, but not super shocking when it happens. Around one hundred Americans die every day due to suicide. Every year, almost thirty thousand United States citizens die from committing suicide. In the 20th century, about twenty five out of 100,000 people committed suicide. It wasn’t as common as it is today, and it was more frowned upon. It is still considered a sin and is looked down at, but since it is seen more often, people get used to it. In Romeo and Juliet, they both commit suicide and is very tragic for everyone involved. It was a huge shock to their parents that they would do something like that.

In the play, the lovers kill themselves because they cannot stand a life without each other. It was a very impulsive and irrational decision. That happens sometimes today, but it is now common to plan your suicide date weeks, and even months in advance. Today, The reason most suicides occur is because of depression and other mental illnesses, whereas back in the day it was most common to kill yourself to get out of a bad situation. An example of this would be being captured and being so loyal you would rather die than be in the arms of your enemy.
