The true purpose of soma is to hide the fact that all of the citizens of the world are literal slaves working on assembly lines that keep the system working. Essentially they are doing very little with their life at all, have no self-identity, don’t have any meaningful skills and have only done menial labour for their entire existence, while all throughout their feelings, emotions, and thoughts, were actually predetermined and planted in their head while they were sleeping as a child. If you had woken up from this, your reaction would probably fall along the same lines as expected, you would quickly go crazy and most likely kill yourself. The twist here is both that you become estranged from society if you stop taking it, and especially if you urge others to do the same, and that it makes you happy.
