Bullying is painful, lasting, and related to low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts, anger, and other mental and physical health problems (C.). Bullying statistics show that about 77 percent of students have admitted to being the victim of one type of bullying or another (Bullying Statistics). Bullying happens in the classroom with teachers present very often. Bullying affect boys and girls alike. Bullying is more prevalent among boys and is more likely to be physical in nature. Emotional bullying and sexual harassment seem to occur more often with girls. Students and teachers witness bullying of some kind on a regular basis. Anxiety is the most common condition associated with bullying. Depression and suicide are also common in students have been bullied. Attendance and grades can be greatly affected when a student is being bullied. There are several noted cases of depression leading to suicide as a direct result of bullying. According to the CDC, suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people. Bully-related suicide can be connected to every kind of bullying.
Bullying can happen anywhere to anyone but some groups are at an increased risk. High risk factors of being bullied include overweight or underweight children, someone who is unable to defend themselves, low self-esteem, and children who are perceived as annoying children who are most likely to bully others are aggressive children, children having home issues, children with authority problems, and children who have friends who are bullies. Seven laws are in place in West Virginia that cover bullying. Rules for anti-hazing is the first law relating to bullying. This law includes a definition of hazing, a definition of a public school-sponsored student organization, a method to advise students and employees of the problems associated with hazing, appropriate penalties or procedures for establishing penalties for students who haze while engaged in activities of a public school-sponsored student organization, and methods to prevent hazing in public school-sponsored organizations. Legislative findings is the second law relating to bullying. The Legislature finds that a sage and civil environment in school is necessary for students to learn and achieve high academic standards. The Legislature finds that harassment, intimidation or bullying, like other disruptive or violent behavior, is conduct that disrupts both a student’s ability to learn and a school’s ability to educate its students in a safe, nonthreatening environment. Definitions include “harassment, intimidation or bullying” means any intentional gesture, or any intentional electronic, written, verbal or physical act, communication, transmission or threat that physically harms a student, damages student property, places a student in reasonable fear of harm to his or her person, places a student in reasonable fear of harm to his or her person, or places a student in
