Suicide And Suicide Research Paper

Research carried out by the World Health Organisation(WHO) has shown there to be almost 500,000 suicide cases each year, with 5 million further unsuccessful suicide attempts. Suicide is the third greatest cause of death in 18 – 24-year-olds and the second greatest cause of death on college campuses (King et. Al, 2008). People choose to commit suicide when they feel they have no other way to escape their problems and suffering. Psychological research has shown several of the factors that contribute to people engaging in suicidal behaviour, which can help us to deeper understand why they choose to do so and allow us to use these signs as a method of predicting and preventing such behaviour.

Many people who struggle to find work and are unemployed for long periods of time can become depressed because they feel as though they are never going to become employed again. Unemployed people are also likely to become stressed due to money as they will have little or no income. These factors can lead to someone engaging in suicidal behaviour because they feel that there are no other solutions to their issues. Relationship and family problems is also a factor that affects people engaging in suicidal behaviour. Arguments with family members or marriage breakdowns can result in people choosing to commit suicide. People who have no family and few or no friends are more likely to commit suicide than those who have a close family and numerous friends because they feel much more isolated and alone in the world and they have no support network to help them if they do have problems or issues, which can make their problems seem more severe than they are and this may result in the person choosing to end their own life. The death of a close friend or family member has been known to cause someone to commit suicide because they cannot cope with the grief and they might worry that they cannot cope without the person they have lost. The factors that can contribute to those who self-harm are very similar to those that can lead to someone engaging in suicidal behaviour, which would indicate that someone who purposely harms themselves is also likely to attempt to commit suicide at another time and some may view self-harm as being an introduction to suicidal behaviour. People who have attempted suicide one or more times in the past are more likely to engage in suicidal behaviour again in the future than those who have not previously engaged in suicidal
