Suicidal In Social Work

Decent Essays
Working with a person who is suicidal is a very scary thought because essentially their life is in your hands. One wrong move or recommendation and it could lead to them committing the act. Although I am aware even the best social worker’s have clients die on them and by no means is it their fault. Many social workers dread the idea of working with suicidal clients, however I do not. I look forward to being able to help clients overcome their situation and thinking of clever interventions to help them continue their life if even for a day. The strengths I would bring to the table of a client who is feeling suicidal is empathy, for the fact that I have a long standing history with suicide. Not only can I relate to the family I can relate

Jumping off buildings, falling to your death, because you think your life is over from the collapse of the stock market. This is what the Great Depression is widely recognized for: crashing stock market, thousands of suicides and how quickly poverty spread across the nation. On October 29, 1929, which is commonly known as the black Tuesday, 40 percent of paper values decreased dramatically (Nelson). The period that followed from 1929 to 1945 was known as the Great Depression. Millions of Americans lost their jobs and money when the stock market crashed.…

If I find Clare, in a very gorgy state with a empty bottle of anti-depressants, first I would take the bottle of her hand. I would assume she tried to commit suicide and I would call ambulance at once. Because Clare is still conscious, I’ll try to keep her awake until help arrives, with talking to her. If she starts losing consciousness, until the vehicle arrives I’ll liberate the breathing paths (I’ll take off prothesis or other foreign body if she has some, scraps of food from the mouth), turn her on side, take care her mouth and nose are free, and the tongue in the normal position (to prevent tongue swallowing into throat, I’ll turn her head maximally back, holding her chin).…

The banging grows closer and he realizes that what is heard is not actually a normal pounding on a wall, it is essentially gun fire. He is drenched in sweat as is finally awake and again, it is a dream or more appropriately, a nightmare that feels all too real.…

The case of choice, a 22-year-old black male referred himself to the emergency room after making deep gashes along his wrists requiring nine stitches, basically a plea for help. Factors of risk, loss of income, relationship, homicidal ideation, symptoms of social withdraw, insomnia, inability to experience pleasure and decreased appetite (Argosy University, 2017). The case brings up doubts about self-injurious behavior in which there is no intent to die, but to impart that presence of a suicide attempt to convey with others seen as suicide gestures (Nieto, Blasco-Fontecilla, die Leόn-Martinexz, & Baca-García, 2014). The suicide is not the greatest threat he has no plan, his homicidal ideation and aggressive behavior are serious warning…

Within the training I deliver which the training is called STORM (skills training on risk management, developed by Manchester University ) I teach that staff must ask patients if they are experiencing suicidal thoughts. Specifically to ask about the type of thought, frequency, how they manage it, and plans and intent around the thought. It is important to know the answer to this question as it furnishes the assessor with the risk information which will allow them to formulate risk and write a risk mitigation plan.…

Important ways to help include listening to the individual in a nonjudgmental manner, provide support, and seek the aid of a doctor or mental health professional (Torpy, Lynm, & Glass, 2005). However that is not the only course of action. “Suicide prevention usually includes a pharmacological cocktail, supportive psychotherapy, and sometimes electroconvulsive therapy” (Maris, 2002). The best way to confront and prevent suicide is through early intervention. “This approach forces interventions at the level of the environment and means of self-destruction, rather than focusing on the individual at risk” (Maris, 2002).…

Research revealed that approximately one-third of homeless individuals in Australia had Schizophrenia (Teesson, et al 2004); therefore, homelessness is a serious risk. In Jennifer’s homeless situation, she had possibly stopped the medication for schizophrenia already and it was not safe for her to live on the street.…
