According to a study at Harvard almost 2 out of 3 adults are obese or overweight. That is an alarmingly high number. Also, 1 in 3 children are obese. These are both horrible facts that should not be a reality. No kid nor adult should be overweight. This is why sugary drinks should be taxed. Sugary drinks are our number one source of added sugar in our diets which is causing all the obesity. Taxing sugary drinks would make them less accessible because of the price which would make it inconvenient to buy a sugary drink and it would drop obesity rates.
One reason for taxing sugary drinks is that all the people in poverty wouldn’t be able to afford sugary drinks. Sugary drinks are the number one contributor to “added” sugars in our diet as they make up 35% of our “added” sugar intake says the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This means that the sugars aren’t found naturally in the drink like fruit but instead the sugar is added to the drinks during the manufacturing process. Drinks with added sugar are suspected to be the leading causes of weight gain, obesity, and type 2 diabetes because there is little or no healthy ingredients. If people were to stop drinking those sugary drinks and have some water a lot of America’s health problems would be fixed. People don’t realize how much a can of soda can effect them let alone 2 cans a day which is the average amount of sodas Americans drink a day. Researchers found that drinking just one soda a day can increase the risk of fatal heart disease or heart attack by a 35 percent. Just 2 cans a day increases your chances by 70%, that is mind boggling to
