“Tracefossilim” of Melodramatic Cuba There has been a resurgence of melodrama in Cuban film since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Indeed, two of Cuba’s most prominent and historically significant filmmakers, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Humberto Solás, have produced highly melodramatic films in the almost two decades since the Soviet collapse, a time known in Cuba as the special period. 1 While there are certainly melodramatic tendencies in other post-revolutionary Cuban films, melodrama has generally been derided on account of its supposed complicity with the ideology of American capitalism. 2 It is thus notable that the films made by Cuba’s two leading, and arguably most politically-committed filmmakers within the special period have been overtly…

All the President’s Men was a film produced to examine the journalism investigation of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein which centered around President Nixon’s Watergate scandal, in result of the break in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters. Unable to grasp the full nature of the scandal at the time, the investigation put forth by Woodward and Bernstein would eventually uncover a deep knowledge of the break in and attempts the Nixon’s administration went through to cover it up. Through out the movie, both Woodward and Bernstein demonstrate characteristics which public administrators should have to ensure responsible conduct. Cooper states, “Only a deeply internalized set of individual attributes can maintain congruence with the organization’s goals and, beyond that, consistency with the obligations of citizenship in a democracy” (2012, p. 172). Responsible administrators should demonstrate individual attributes similar to those of Woodward and Bernstein.…

Although there is some truth to the movie Rain Man, these depictions are really just a portrayal of one individual. Each student has a unique learning style, and the instructor has to find the right strategy for learning that will help develop their talents and strengths. Ultimately, Interstellar is something so many films aspire to be, but rarely achieve: It is a journey in and of itself, an experience that takes the viewer outside his or her own body for three hours and explores the outer ranges not just of space, but of the human experience, probing at huge existential issues on both broad and intimate scales, and drawing some profound, powerful conclusions along the way. given what it is trying to quantify – the possibility for the importance of emotion in our scientific exploration of the universe – Dr. Mann’s betrayal (which is an attempt to illustrate the selfish fallibility of mankind’s survival instinct, in contrast with the heights that same instinct instills in Cooper) – comes from a sincere effort…

Texts are timeless even when referring to particular historical contexts as they offer reflections of the human nature and societies as they transcend time and place, by capturing the essence of the world we live in. The universal values that texts present regardless of their context are clearly portrayed in Carol Reed’s 1949 film ‘The Third Man’. Key notions explored through the film are; the transactional nature of human interactions, the complexity of friendship and loyalty and the ambiguous nature of morality. Reed portrays these through his stylistic use of the film noir techniques, chiaroscuro lighting and the musical instrument the zither to explore the human condition in Post- war Vienna.…

The film Strawberries and Chocolate, by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, is a film set in Havana 1979. Gutiérrez Alea’s attempts to illustrate a dynamic, Cuban revolution in light of what he depicts as a static revolution that has stopped moving forward. The central theme of the film seems to be a struggle between the binary ideological opposition represented by the two main characters: Diego and David and the struggle for access to freedom. Using two opposite minded characters, Gutiérrez Alea juxtaposes David, a student and avid Castro supporter, and Diego, flamboyantly gay independent spirit, to create a dramatically engaging film of its time period and critiquing the political regime. Utilizing cinematics, scenes and character relationships, Gutiérrez Alea shapes moral driven controversial movie.…
