This essay is going to be about two articles called “The Amazing Penguin Rescue” (Lauren Tarshis) and “Saving Penguins, One Sweater At A Time” (Kristin Lewis). Did you know that little penguins are a species of penguin, so named because they can range anywhere from 10 to 12 inches tall (Kristin Lewis). When oil gets on penguins their feathers clump up, when this happens it exposes their skin and allows all the cold water and poisonous oil to get to their skin and make them cold (Lauren Tarshis 16). The penguins from “ The Amazing Penguin Rescue” and “ Saving Penguins, One Sweater At A Time” should be brought to a zoo close to home because it can prevent them from dying from poisonous oil spill when searching for food.…

I chose to investigate the environmental impact of gypsy moths because I have personally had experience cleaning up after these pests in northern Ohio and I know that they are becoming an issue in other parts of Ohio as well. I was able to witness some of the damage they have done while removing defoliated trees in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Gypsy moths are a non-native, invasive species that, over the past decade, have been coming into the state from Pennsylvania and Michigan. The moth undergoes a complete metamorphosis and while a caterpillar it has the ability to feed on over three hundred species of trees and shrubs and cause serious damage and defoliation. The moth’s preference for oak, make the oak tree particularly at risk because the caterpillars favor it and a tree can typically only withstand two years of defoliation before the damage is permanent or results in the death of the tree.…

Diane Ackerman adores bats. In fact, she shows her depth infatuation for these infamous creatures in her nonfiction essay, “In Praise of Bats.” Ackerman strives to persuade her audience to appreciate the existence of the winged animal, and to use that sense of appreciation and apply it into the daily lives of others. By doing so, Ackerman paints the image of bats in the highest approbation, and conveys her message with sinuously developed, complex sentences. Ackerman made sure that her imagery was supported by a warm and delicate tone, complex diction, figurative language, and rhetorical devices.…
