I looked up at the sky, and resolved to be the best deputy ThistleClan has ever seen. Sure, I may be a bit sassy at times, but a lot of my clanmates were that way too. Heck, even Brownstar himself was a super sassy cat. It was rapidly growing dark, and it was ThistleClan custom for the deputy to sit vigil overnight. As the rest of the droopy, sleep-deprived cats slowly filed into their dens, yawning, Brownstar walked up to me. "…

Thought provoking passage from this section: “Cassia Reyes, the society is pleased to present you with your match. I smile as Xander’s face appears on the portscreen immediately following the recorded message. It’s a good picture of him. As always, his smile looks bright and real, his blue eyes kind. I study his face closely, pretending that I’ve never seen this picture before; that I have only had a glimpse of him once, last night at the banquet.…

The pleasing scent of freshly ground coffee wafted through the apartment, infiltrating Tom’s dream with its aromatic fragrance. Opening his eyes, he found himself alone on the sofa, the blanket he’d had draped around his shoulders now neatly tucked around his boxer-clad body. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes, and stifling a yawn, he threw back the blanket and looked around his apartment. “Hey, sleepyhead.” Booker stood leaning against the kitchen counter, a cup of coffee in his hand.…

Deanna, leggy, beautiful, and daring, came a long way from a rugged childhood and the time of liquor bottles aimed at her mother’s head. So said a Washington Post reporter in 2008, “Councilwoman Deanna Flin is a fresh face and a breath of fresh air in D.C. politics.” In the eyes of her colleagues (boozing old school boys with potty mouths and potbellies), she personified Hillary Clinton, the little engine that would, if she could, overturn the political status quo. “Too big for her britches,” said one, which struck Deanna as funny, but not in the ha-ha-ha way.…

The protagonist and narrator of the short story “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver is not written to be definitively static or dynamic. Carver seems to leave his character’s intentions and true emotions to the interpretation of the reader, especially in relation to Robert. His actions and syntax indicate to the reader early on that one of his defining characteristics is an overwhelming sense of self-centeredness. However, what is less obvious is the narrator’s underlying insecurity that accompanies this quality. Like many other first person narrators, Carver’s protagonist is not entirely reliable and the reader must question his honesty, both with himself and with the reader.…

I miss them already. Despite the freezing cold snow and the nipping air, we had a lovely Christmas break. As I inspect my child, now grown with children of her own, holding tickets back to their home, longing envelopes me. Hoards of people push past, unaware of my pain, on their own schedules and heading toward different trains, talking and texting on their cell phones. My family boards, time as if in slow-motion, and waves goodbye until I see them again.…
