The author's main point in this novel is to illustrate the significance of sugar in world history. Sugar has slowly made its way from the highest of society to the lower and middle classes. Sugar took over the world it went into the households of many and became apart of the diet everyone. The amount of sugar that was used increased, and in turn the amount that was produced increased. Sugar became a necessity rather than a delicacy. People became addicted and dependent on sugar, people that worked in factories in the industrial revolution needed sugar to energize them and satisfy their hunger. It was a long explanation that began on page 75. One of the most interesting parts of these chapters was a quote she used: “ Slavery was not born of racism; rather racism was a consequence of slavery.” (189) The treatment of slaves was horrible, and for years it was tolerable, because slaves weren’t thought of as people. Although Whites relied on slaves for just about everything, they were still treated as livestock or property. “ most even kept a cute slave child or two as pampered pets who, in uncute adolescence, were banished.” (122) All plantations were different, but they all were mostly concerned with money. Slave owners used excuses for the morality behind slavery, and in the later stages of slavery more people began to question its principles. People tried to regulate the laws of slavery, by creating black codes. Black codes set the minimum requirements for food and free time, and the working conditions. These codes were trying to minimize the deaths of slaves. If an owner murdered a slave there was only a fine of £15. The punishments for a slave running away was cutting of ear or a hamstrings, or in some cases even execution. The explanation was very detailed and easy to understand, and was written well. What is considered a society normal then, might very wrong now. An example of this would take place when people were just starting to make baked goods. The baked small animals like birds and frogs alive into a pie, so that when it was cut open they would fly or jump out. It was also a big change of morality when slavery was abolished. Though some people were not in favor of slavery, not many actively spoke against it. Slowly people began to realize the wrong in their action of supporting slavery. Having a child outside of marriage was considered very wrong, but now it is common. Humans change, and so does their judgement. We evolve along with our opinions and society
