Suffocation of the Mind

Sigmund Freud once stated “The goal of all life is death.” Under Freudian Theory, (Which pertains to Id, Ego, and Superego) this is a relatable and credible statement that gives possible reasoning for Dylan's doings. However, Dylan’s actions were forced by his overdeveloped Id Eric. Cullen’s novel Columbine, displays Eric as sole perpetrator, responsible for the Columbine shooting. Eric’s over overdeveloped id caused Dylan, who is going through a state of deep depression became manipulated. Eric’s overpowered Id keeps Dylan from pursuing happiness. The Antagonist lours Dylan toward evil and suffocates his ego and superego throughout his journey leading up to the massacre, until his own demise.

These stages clearly points out how Dylan’s Depression and vulnerability because of this allows him to fall more susceptible to Eric's overdeveloped Id. “Psychosocial theory does not focus on the obvious physical changes that occur as children grow up, but rather on the socioemotional factors that influence an individual's psychological growth (VeryWell).” Stage four is Industry vs. Inferiority. This stage has to do with the way peers and social standings affect the way a person develops. Dylan’s depression and lack of social skills prevented him from getting a girl in high school up until prom. Because of his lack of social skills he was made fun of and neglected, all Dylan wanted to be was recognized. If Dylan were to get a girlfriend sometime in high school, it is very possible his confidence would have risen, and he would not have been a part of the Columbine shooting. Stage five is Identity vs. Role Confusion. This is when outside influences manipulate someone who is confused what their role in life is and molds it to their own. Dylan’s depression caused him to feel purposeless in life. Instead of continuing school, raising a family, and getting a well paid job with his intelligence. Eric’s overdeveloped Id and strong use of leadership used Dylan’s vulnerability, and manipulated him into being Eric’s henchman. Eric persuaded Dylan who was lost in life, into thinking his purpose was to kill innocent lives. Dylan should not be held responsible for the Columbine shooting, as the stages of development show Dylan’s struggles in life, as Eric's Id suffocates Dylan’s
