In late 2001, Sue Monk Kidd’s novel, The Secret Life of Bees, was published. Set in the summer of 1964, the novel follows Lily Owens, 14-year-old white girl, who drags her caretaker Rosaleen to discover the past of her mother. Along the way, she meets the Boatwright sisters, who own a bee farm and teach Lily beekeeping, honey, and love. if there were to be a change in time or place or a change in time and place, there would be just as many similarities as differences, even though the book is currently set in 1964 in South Carolina. If The Secret Life of Bees were written in a different time period, any time in the future would be adaptable, especially in the 2010’s.
