What is SIDS? The center for disease control states, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is defined as the sudden death of an infant less than one year of age that cannot be explained after a thorough investigation is conducted that includes a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the third leading cause of infant mortality in the United States and the leading cause of death among infants aged one through twelve months. I am a mother of three daughters, and I could not imagine putting my babies to bed and then waking up to find out that my child has died. The increased retention of body heat can also be dangerous for some infants. Again, the critical point to remember is that belly-sleep has up to 13 times the risk of sudden death as back-sleep. Even with all of the research and public health campaigns, the parents of the children who died from SIDS still do not have an answer to the question on why this happened. These parents often have to endure not only the death of a child but then also a complete investigation into that death. In the book SIDS & Infant Death Survival Guide, it states some medical officials say they don't believe that Sudden Infant Death Syndrome exists and refuse to diagnose a case as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome no matter what. The book tells how initially police, coroners, and medical examiners are suspicious of bereaved parents. I am sure this is a hard thing to have to endure for a parent to be viewed as a suspect in a case against their child. Usually, when there is a death of a love one, most people are surrounded by people who want to show sympathy and provide emotional support, but for some of these parents they are sometimes accused and viewed as murderers. I personally think that people find it hard to believe that a child just died with no known cause and so they immediately start to look at the …show more content…
The children’s deaths were believed to have been caused by Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. One of her children was the first in the United Stated to be placed on a breathing monitor, to monitor his breathing due to her previous children’s untimely deaths. William Fitzpatrick began investigating her, due to the odds of having five deaths with the same unexplained cause. Waneta Hoyt ultimately ended up confessing to suffocating the children because she wanted them to stop crying. I think a lot can be blamed on cases like this to the reason why a lot of people struggle with labeling the cause of death in an infant as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. I think it is very unfair to the parents who love their children and have done nothing wrong but still have to endure the possibility that they may never know why their child died and sometimes then end up have a shadow of suspicion casted over them by others. There are many ways to help raise awareness and to raise funds for research about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. You can give cash donations in the memory of an infant or another loved one to the American SIDS Institute. You can also sign up to host a Spring-for-SIDS
