Sudanese Civil War Research Paper

The Country Sudan became its own independent country in 1956. Sudan was separated into a Northern region and a Southern region. The Sudanese had their first civil war in 1955, which ended in 1972 when an agreement called the Addis Ababa Agreement was reached between the Government of Sudan and the Southern Sudan Liberation Movement. The Addis Ababa Agreement gave the Southern region of Sudan more control over itself and promised the Abyei, which is located on the north and south border the right to decide if they wanted to remain part of the Northern region or join the newly formed southern region. During the war the Government of Sudan used aerial bombings to attack the southern sudanese. The bombings were severe and a lot of people were killed. The only choice many of the Sudanese had was to leave. ‘“It’s just a matter of dying or escape [in Sudan]. We decided to go. I was alone with my young brothers. They shoot us – it was bad. Mosquitoes, malaria. It’s a journey. … Desert area … survival”’ (Makuel Ajak Ariik). The Sudanese also migrated because their religion was not accepted. Many migrated to neighboring countries, such as Kenya, Uganda, Egypt, and Ethiopia. Some of them ended up leaving the neighboring countries and going to Australia. Others stayed in the neighboring countries. It was hard for them going to other places like Australia, but it was better than Sudan. Not all of of the Sudanese migrated to neighboring countries or Australia, some decided to go to the persian Gulf Countries especially those looking for jobs. However, after the Persian War started the refugees to places like the United States or Canada. If they were unable to travel out of the country some stayed in Sudan, but moved away from their home.
