My passion in osteopathic medicine was confirmed when I comforted a distressed patient which made me realize how important patient satisfaction was to me. The ideal practice of medicine she spoke of also resonated my own beliefs of practicing medicine: to consider the person…

When I first learned about osteopathic medicine I was attracted to the idea of the holistic approach of working with the patient to treat the whole body and not just the disease. This osteopathic philosophy is supplemented with what I had learned during my time as a Public Health student where the focused was on heath education with an emphasis on preventative medicine to help the individual and community. I came to this realization when I was observing an osteopathic family medicine physician interacting with a diabetic patient that was non-compliant with his medication that came in for a cut on his calf that was not healing properly. With Dr. Brandon Luskin, the orthopedic surgeon, I observed a variety of procedures and illnesses that accompany the musculoskeletal system. From children with broken arms to elderly patients suffering from stenosing tenosynovitis, I had the privilege of interacting with patients of all ages. Throughout my experience with Dr. Luskin, I had the opportunity to observe post-operative…

When I was younger I never knew the wealth of possibilities that came alongside a D.O. degree, and my interest in Osteopathic Medicine was firmly solidified with my interaction with countless Osteopathic physicians while working at Baptist Hospital of Miami as a ED physician scribe. Having worked with both DO and MD physicians I can say, with certainty, that the way in which DO physicians, in particular, Dr. Alexa Viloria, a Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine alumni, handled patients, considering the interconnectedness of the human body, is what makes them such effective healers. It is by taking into account various bodily functions, and how they are connected and dependent on each other that DO physicians are able to…
