One part of having a successful mindset is success with time management skills. Athletes who develop successful time management between school work, extracurriculars, and family will have the quality for the rest of their lives. Another part of being successful is using creativity in finding ways to improve. Sometimes just practicing is not enough to improve to the level the athlete may want to achieve. Extracurricular activities help students develop a strong focus and concentration which is also another part of having a successful mindset. Having the skills to handle internal pressure is another way to have a successful mindset. One of the most important parts of having a successful mindset is learning when to take risks. Taking risks is important in order for student athletes to improve. If an athlete takes the wrong risk it could ruin their chances for improving and may cause an injury. In order for an athlete to become successful and have a successful mindset taking responsibility for individual performance is important. When being involved in extracurricular activities individual performance is just as important as team performance. When an athlete makes a mistake apologizing or making up for the mistake is important in order to have a successful mindset (Chen). Studies have proven that students who participate in extracurricular activities have a higher average GPA than students who do not participate. From personal experience the students who do participate in sports and other extracurricular activities tend to have higher grades than others. This may be because their motivation carries over to their school work. Studies have also shown that student athletes miss less school than other students. Some schools have attendance policies in order to be able to participate in the activity. An example of a policy would be, if a student was late to school unexcused the student could not participate in the activity that night whether it be a game, meet, or practice.The study also said that student athletes performed 10% better in core subjects like math, science, social studies, and language arts (Chen). Some schools set up an eligibility policy as well an attendance policy. An example of one of these policies would be having eligibility checks every week and if a student is failing two or more core classes they would not be able to participate in the activity until the next eligibility check and the student would have to attend an after school tutorial
