Our classrooms today are filled with students that come from different cultures and very diverse backgrounds. My job as an educator is to give every student and equal opportunity to achieve and be successful in the classroom. I teach at a career center that is approximately six years old, and my district is supportive of the program. The curriculum I use to teach my advanced electrical class prepares students to become electrical apprentices after they graduate. When I look at the make-up of my class, over half of the kids are ELL students. Learning the required vocabulary that electricians use can be challenging for my ELL students. Regardless of the hands-on skills, my ELL kids have, it is important that they know and understand the vocabulary …show more content…
I am teaching young men and women to be professional electricians. As electricians, they will communicate with other electricians as well as customers, and they will need to read and understand work orders. Without knowing and understanding the vocabulary that the electrical industry uses, my ELL students will struggle and may not make it as electricians. When I think of my question, and I look harder at the data the literature shows, it only emphasizes the importance of using instructional strategies that will lead my students to success. When my ELL kids enter the workforce after graduation, I want them to be prepared and confident with the vocabulary that electricians …show more content…
Nam focuses on many studies that have been done on retaining and understanding vocabulary. For example, Hulstijn and Laufer feel that open-ended tasks contribute to students’ vocabulary retention (as cited in Nam, 2010). Furthermore, Plass, Chun, Mayer, and Leutner suggest from their findings that students remember unknown words better when a picture accompanies the written meaning (as cited in Nam, 2010). There is plenty of research for me to look at when conducting my study. With the changing demographics that are taking place in our country as well as our classroom, more research is being done on ELL students and

In the closing chapter of Hayes, Baruth, and Kessler’s Literacy con Cariño, the authors reflect on the factors that cause immigrant students, such as the ones Robert taught, to fall behind in school. They also focus on what Robert did to combat those issues so he could instill a love of literacy into his class. Through ongoing textual dialogue, published work, and Robert’s confidence in them, the students transformed from the timid children they once were to avid readers and writers. The implementation of reading in their every day life was key as well. Most students came from environments where the written word was sparse, causing them to not practice enough.…

Having a strong oral language foundation will facilitate the reading and writing learning process. In regards to read-alouds for ELLs in second grade, I would say that it is a great way of developing and improving vocabulary and comprehension. By participating in rich and structured conversations based on a text that has been read aloud will benefit students as they can orally discuss and analyze important key ideas and details of a text. 2.…

I chose to record a 25-minute whole group, English Language Arts lesson that focused on the 7-Steps Vocabulary strategy and Sentence Frames. This lesson focused on two selected terms (play and dip) from the targeted story “Pig in a Wig.” As I began the lesson, I activated students’ prior knowledge by asking students if they remembered the two words that they learned the previous week. Students were able to recall the terms and their definition and were able to remember the way those words were introduced to them. I began explaining to students that they would be introduced to two new words from a new story we would begin reading the following day.…

A few years ago I was asked by my department chair to teach an English Language Development (ELD) class. As I had only been teaching for a year, I was unfamiliar with the full requirements of the class and nervous to take on what I felt was a BIG responsibility. Once I accepted our dean of curriculum asked me to be the ELD advisor. I took two days to decide that with my family background, my grandfather picked fruit for a living and my mom picked and packed growing up, I could make the students understand that working hard in school and continuing their education post high school could help them get more out of life than merely staying at a menial job. My first year was difficult.…

An evidence based practice that I came across in my research was an article titled, Literacy and Evidence-Based Practice in Deaf Education. This study talks about students with hearing disabilities in reading, vocabulary, and organizing concepts. In their studies they saw that the reading ability of those that had a visual impairment was above average, so they suggested no more than twelve minutes a day reading and spending more time on their vocabulary. There are three tiers of vocabulary that humans have. The first tier are words that you expect the student to know but they may not know.…
