Successful Academic Engagement

Decent Essays
A key thing that has allowed me to be successful academically is engagement in class. Building relationships with my teachers by coming before or after school to obtain help and clarification on assignments, allowed me to demonstrate that I am dedicated to my studies. Enjoying the topic in class and having an interest in the subject is also beneficial. It makes me more eager to learn, motivates me to work on my assignments, and participate in class. Lastly, the one topic that I thoroughly took to heart was the idea of preparing for a lecture before the lesson.…

Two of the Effective Educator Goals that I have chosen to provide rationale on are, Manages & Motivates and Reflects on Practice. I feel very strongly that most students, when given a positive, encouraging, and nurturing learning environment, can motivate themselves to be socially interactive and engaged in their own education. When students see your positive energy, feel your desire to learn, and know they are an asset to your classroom; most often will put forth the effort to be an active participant. I have had differentiated environments to meet the needs of certain individuals to promote a supportive and meaningful environment that was conducive to learning.…

Personally, reading is not a task that is prominent in my life. This summer, however, I was able to read two books, Room and Out of My Mind, because I, as previously stated, spent a large portion of my summer at a camp in which the usage of cell phones was prohibited. Through this experience, I determined that although I do enjoy sitting down and getting enveloped by the plot and characters of a book, I can never find time to do so. Still, those few times that I have been able to experience a book similar to the previous, I have felt the pleasure of being purely relaxed and distant from the real world. Despite that nearly all novels assigned to be read in school are for the greater part uninteresting, some are actually intriguing and memorable.…

This storage is capable of holding roughly seven items of information for approximately 15 to 20 seconds.” (Foster, 2011) Short-term memory is very restricted and needs to make room for all original knowledge coming in consistently. “Long-term is a more permanent storage, hoarding information over hours, days or years. An instructor needs to look at a student’s “academic engagement” to get a more accurate determination of motivation (Ormrod, 2015). Academic engagement includes the following: behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement (Ormrod, 2015). Behavioral engagement is where motivation increases a student’s level of effort and determination in an activity that is relative to the student’s needs and goals (Ormrod, 2015). This can engage the student to tackle an assignment head on with enthusiasm or approach the assignment with apprehension. Behavioral engagement pushes a student to complete tasks when faced with challenges.…

During my JA in a Day internship, I learned quickly that student engagement would be important to the lesson plan. Having younger classes, I knew that we would have to keep the students engaged or they would lose interest quickly. A main engagement strategy we used was positive reinforcement. Students, especially the younger ones, want to be praised for their hard work. While the students were working on the activities, my partner and I would constantly let the students know they were doing a great job.…
